Default Mastray & OdinsDad - QUESTION

How do you house you ferrets?? My bfs little brothers wants one and they plan on getting a freaking massive cage but don't know what types of bedding works better to reduce smell.. Are yours litter trained to those corner litterboxes? Any info would be * !!! How do you keep odor down on them?

Kenya I had a big cage for mine but we usually just let him run around the house!! They are sooo easy to litter train! All you really have to do is find out where they go and just stick the litter box in there!!

As for the smell...........well mine was really stinky lmao I had to clean his cage EVERY day and he usually got a bath once a week or so! Hed even get in the shower with me *Boy do I miss him

If it's just one you don't need a huge cage... though some people vary on what huge means I mean like these... which is what we had for 4 each...

This was in our house in OK.

This one is really very nice and they make one that is half the size... if *we had just one or two I'd get the smaller one.

They make something called "Biodor" that you squirt in their water and it's suppose to help with their smell. We tried it... it worked... but you HAVE TO START them out on water like that because some can taste the difference and won't drink it. The best litter we've found that keeps the smell down is "Feline Pine". You do have to wash their bedding every so often. Though I have to disagree with the bathing a ferret frequently. That will dry out their skin and cause massive problems. A GREAT book is "Ferrets For Dummies". If you are thinking of shredded *paper and wood chips as bedding... that's not what we're talking about. It's actually not healthy for them to live in that kind of condition. Our ferrets are very spoiled and they have linolium flooring and bath carpets over it. Then the usual hammocks and hanging fuzzy tubes... *cube... etc.

The also sell a type of spring that allows you to block a corner if they tend to poop in it and there is no room for a litter box there. Some ferrets are EXTREMELY LAZY to where if the lip of the litter box is "too big" for them.. they just poop next to it... so be careful with that. 1 out of the 9 ferrets we've had actually would RUN all the way from one end of the house to the other to use a litter box. FOR A FERRET... that was extremely rare. Another big thing is too not wake them up and let them out right away... let it poop first! Make sure it did it too! We actually went through a spell where we had ferrets that would PRETEND to go just so they could get out of the cage and play!! LOL Crazy little critters! LOL They are loads of fun... but you must make sure you "ferret-proof" your house... or they'll find their way outside (dryer duct)... or knock over a plant and dig it up... knock over the smaller trash cans... that was a huge issue with a couple of them. Can't leave rubber out... keep remotes and phones out of reach we've had a couple of fuzzies that had fetishes for rubber... some leather... some plastic bags... or paper towels.

Anyway, this got really long... even still I could go ON forever! LOL The best thing to do is to get a book on them to help protect the HOME and your fuzzbutt!

I have video's on youtube of them... ferretfunhous3 seems to be the MOST popular... with over 50k hits. I think it's the music that does it though lol

Thanks Mastray! You could write a book for us and it would be excellent!! I don't mind the smell, but they eventually want more (lol how can you just have one of anything???).. They want to get the Ferret Nation cage for sure.. All the pets between my family and my bfs family are SPOILED!! lol

How does Odin like the ferrets?

Odin wants to EAT them! LOL but if they are in the cage he'll sometimes sit in front of it while they taunt him by running up and down the ramps. Otto, one of our fuzzies will actually chase Nikki around the house till he gets bored with it... lol poor girl!

I forgot to mention... ferrets should really only be given a bath once a month - two months. They can play in the water more often then that... but as far as shampoo and conditioner goes... keep that to once every couple of months. Hope you get a scuba ferret!! I've only ever had TWO out of NINE that would dunk their heads under the water and swim UNDER the water... it was SOOOO COOL! I loved it!

The ferret nation cage is excellent!! EASY TO CLEAN... unlike our other cage which we got from martinscages.com.

Oh and it's called "Ferret Math"... it's amazing how you CAN'T get just one! We always get asked if we breed them... which is hilarious! They amazingly multiply even though they've been spayed/neutered! * *LOL

This is my site... I haven't really worked on it in a while so it's out of date as far as the fuzzies go but the links are useful

http://thestrayers.com/ffh3x2.html

Love this pic... this is Arwen... Odinsdad's ferret

Those peanuts were bought special for the fuzzies because they are biodegradable... if they were your regular packaging nuts they would eat them and cause a blockage. They loved tunneling around in them! A couple of them, like Arwen would run off with a couple to eat but they just dissolved in their mouth.

This was Reagan... he was our FATTEST ferret... weighing in at 4 lbs 11oz lol If you watch the ferretfunhous3 video he is too fat to fit into the tunnels... everyone said he looked like a bear rug. lol poor guy.

She looks freaky there without her winter coat but the point is that not to leave drinks around... lol

This is her with her winter coat... doesn't even look like the same ferret huh!??

... and just a cute one cuz' I love the tongue sticking out... can you find 5 fuzzies lol

Some things to know about Ferrets that hasn't been covered yet (or possibly not enough).

1) You MUST ferret-proof your home. *There's a lot that goes into it, but think of what you would do to protect your home from a 2-year old child, shink it down to the size of a ferret, and include things that would cause "blockage" issues to a ferret (removing foam and rubber items [including remote controls and phones] from a ferret's reach). *Read a book or look online for tips to ferret-proof a home, or ask for the complete list from us... we'll try and think of everything if you need us, just ask.

2) Ferret smell/stink... a LOT of this can be controlled by the DIET you give your ferret. *Feed them stinky-based food and guess what... they'll have stinky based poop and BO. *A LOT of ferret food contains fish-based products like herring and the like... if what you feed your ferret has fish products in it, they will stink more then ferrets that don't have fish-based products in their food. *The "default" ferret food is "Marshall Farms" food... it's what most pet stores will DEMAND you feed your ferret (big fat paycheck from Marshalls for saying that). *Marshall Farms ferret food is not particuarly high-quality, contains stinky fish, and costs about twice as much as high-quality ferret food. *Don't bother feeding your ferret this junk (the main ingredient is even a by-product, not real meat). *There are Ferret-Food quality charts that can be found on the internet (just like what you find for dogs). *Actually, there are many (if not most) of the "ferret food" brands that are pretty low on the chart, and there are MANY HIGH QUALITY kitten foods that are BETTER for your ferret then higher-priced "ferret foods". *Note, I said high quality kitten food, not the cheapest stuff. *Consult the ferret food charts for what works best for you, but we personally use Purina One Kitten for the ferrets... it has real chicken, no fish and is about half the price of Marshalls... it's also CLEARLY rated higher then Marshall's food on every ferret chart we've seen.

Just some things to consider... if you have any questions, just ask!

Okay... So we got the Petco flyer yesterday and the ferrets are $99 until August 19th. Did you guys get any of yours from the petstore? They only have the ones that are sable with white heads (not sure what thats called) and they're getting new babies in Friday.. We looked at pictures online and his little brother wants one like these.. Guess we'll just have to see what Petco gets in..

We bought Max at PetCo

If you click on the pic it will make them bigger...

Eowyn - is a sable
Arwen - is a blaze (blazes have the line down the middle of their head normally they have white "booties and kneepads") you know their markings... you can see better on the pics odinsdad posted
Farrah - is a silver mitt
Max - is a black mitt
Reagan - is albino (though his eyes were barely red... if a white has black eyes they're called a "black-eyed white")
Fritz - is a sable (though the under coat is yellowish on him and on Eowyn it was more white) I don't think they seperate that though cuz' when they are babies it's too hard to tell
Seven - is a champange (though I thought she was a cinnamon)
Otto - is a blaze though his white marking is so big it took away his mask except for one side.

About ferret coloring:
Now when you by a ferret their color will sometimes change... sometimes darker, sometimes it will get lighter... there is really no telling. I wanted to call Seven "Foxy" cuz' I thought she looked like a little fox and was so beautiful... now she's FAT and short compared to our other girls... LOL. I still love her though LOL

Ferrets also get their winter coats randomly when living inside... somtimes they'll get it in the middle of HOT summer but their body can't tell since it's always the same temp in the house. They can also look completely different when they get it... like the pics of Eowyn I posted. They can also get a little pudge while they have their winter coat.

Nail Care:
One thing I forgot to mention is BUY FERRETONE! It's a oily liquid (that can be messy) you can use to distract them so that you can trim their nails. We've noticed that kits (baby ferrets) don't care about it like they do when they get older. But their front claws grow 3x faster than their back nails because of their genetics from generations and 1,000 of yrs of digging.

**** What you do is buy cat nail clippers don't buy these:

They ARE CUTE... but don't work for NOTHING!

Purchase FerreTone (liquid):

Then when they get long or every two wks or so lay it on your lap on it's back and drip ferretone on it's belly. Then one paw at a time (while they're busy licking up ferretone) clip their nails. I normally start with the front incase they decide to try and run off (their back ones hardly need to be clipped). If they don't like the ferretone I have NOOOO clue how to clip their nails... we just wait till they get older. Ferretone is very good for them.. keeps their coat GORGEOUS!

Ferretone is also great when someone wants to hold a ferret. Most aren't the type that want to held so they sometimes scratch people up trying to get down and play. That's why it's important to keep their nails trimmed!

OK... I'll shut up now... lol ... I use to know of a great ferret site that had a BIG list of their colors with pics... I'll see if I can't find it. OH AND A GREAT WAY TO KEEP THE SMELL DOWN... don't feed them food with fish as a product
Here's a great ferret food chart!:
http://www.mdferretpaws.org/care/food_treats.html

Okay... I'm done really lol

I live in California where ferrets are still illegal (which is ridiculous but I'm not going to go into that on this thread). My family grew up owning illegal ferrets and we actually bred a couple of litters when we were teenagers. *Anyway, I don't own any ferrets now but miss those little carpet sharks terribly. Thanks for all your pics and ferret talk , it brought back a ton of fond memories. *If we didn't have the baby on the way I may have considered smuggling a couple over the state line again ;-) One day we will get more of those guys, they really are such a unique and fun pet to have. *I had a sable that was named Mosby (female) and kept one of her kits which I named Nosferatu , I'm not sure what color to call him.. he was a redish sable. *They would follow me around my apartment , hopping behind me and making their little dook noise. *

I thought of a couple things to remember when you get your ferret, I hope these already haven't been stated...

MAKE SURE YOU DO NOT HAVE ROCKING CHAIRS OR any furniture the ferret can climb into with moving parts. *One of the families that adopted one of our kits lost their baby due to a rocking chair accident. Devastating.

A word of cation about stairs. *In my loft apartment we had the kind of stairs that are just a plank of wood with an opening underneath. *Luckily I had a couch under the staircase but I can't tell you how many times my ferrets would miss the stair and fall through the plank!! They could have seriously injured themselves had it not been for the padding.

I can't wait to see pics of the new baby. Sounds like there are some great sources for knowledge about ferrets on this board. I may need to pick your brains someday when we get our little guy in the future ;-). *Thanks again for the pics and videos... I needed my ferret fix.
