I'm scared to death right now, but I'm sure it's much more difficult for my aunt. She's my mother's sister. All three of us are very close. I used to spend my weekends taking care of her farm with her and horse back riding when I was a teen and now we go the beach and whale watching together. She called late last night with some pretty devestating news. She was just diagnosed with kidney cancer and they think it's spread to her spine. She doesn't know much more than that as of right now. Apparently she's been having some back pains and over the weekend it got really bad so she went to the Dr. At first they thought it was kidney stones, but after a scan they said it's cancer. I don't know what other tests they ran to reach that conclusion. As of right now my mom, my uncle (my mom's brother), his wife, and me are the only ones who know. She's waiting until she goes to see the next doctor to find out what grade it is and what treatment she'll be getting before she tells anyone else.
She has had such a rough couple of years. Last year she was diagnosed with Type 2 Diabetes. She's been doing great with that! She's been working out, eating healthier and dropped over 50lb. Then a couple of a months ago she had to spend over $1,000 on her dog who developed a lump near one of his ribs. Thankfully that came back as benign, but now she's facing this. I just don't understand why such bad things happen to such good people. My aunt is truly one of the nicest people you'd ever meet. She's too nice for her own good sometimes! This is going to be a very difficult journey, but I'm praying that she'll be able to beat it. I don't usually post such personal stuff like this on public forums, but I needed to vent somewhere and get it out. Please pray for her. She's going to need all the prayers she can get.

I am really sorry to hear about your Aunt. It is clear how much you love and admire her - she is lucky to have a niece like you. I will definitely pray for her and that she recovers. Hang in there and don't worry about venting - we are here for you!

So sorry to hear that. Take a deep breath and wait for the final results of the tests and then take it one day at a time. I'll be praying for her and for you to give you the strength to deal with what ever comes next.

Thanks everyone. I just can't focus on my work today. I feel so guilty that I'm going about my business... or at least trying to... as if nothing's happening when I know she must be so terrifed. I don't know when her next appointment is. She was waiting for a call last night so they may have called her today for all I know. I'll update you once I hear back. The good thing is that where she'll be going for treatment is really close to where one of her daughters lives so she'll have easy access to go to and from and a place to stay for free. She hasn't told her daughter yet, but there's no way in the world she won't let her stay there. Her daughter is also a registered nurse which will help.
Another part of this that I didn't share yet is that my grandmother suffers from bi-polar and Schizophrenia. When she has a lot on her mind she's shown in the past that she stops taking her medication which isn't good obviously. Thankfully, when she's bad she's not "bad" as in violent. Her bad episodes mainly consist of writing nasty letters to people, spending money on rediculous stuff, and walking. The first two we can deal with, but the walking part is scary. She can walk so far in such a short amount of time and without knowing where she went, it makes it really hard to find her. A couple of summers ago she told my grandfather she was going for a walk around the block. The next day she was found at a Wal-Mart all the way across town. So, having to tell her is just adding more stress on an already incredibly stressful situation. I just can't believe this is happening.

so sorry to hear this terrible news ... your aunt must be so scared! You must have some great stories to share about your years growing up and helping out on her farm. I would think her diagnosis is probably at an early stage - fingers crossed - just take it one day at a time as they can do wonderful things now with this ugly disease... oh and go ahead and vent!
