At the end of the day yesterday, we received a recorded phone call from our school district letting the families of the children in our school district know that their own children were well protected and that they have a contingency plan in place for incidents such as this. All I could think about during this whole ordeal was the way a person could just walk right in the front door of my son's school and never have their identity challenged. There are no metal detectors and the people sitting at the desk facing the hallway are seniors doing work study. They rarely pay attention to anyone who walks in.
I had to pick my son up from school yesterday because he had a club meeting and I just couldn't wait to hug him! It's sad when a 15 year old has to tell his mom, it's ok, we're safe here I promise. So my birthday present yesterday was seeing my son at the end of the day and telling him I love him. It was the best gift ever! |

Hannah's school entrances are locked from the outside and there are guards at the doors to monitor anyone who wants to enter. I had to go up to her school a few weeks ago. I was stopped at the door, asked for ID, my picture was taken on a machine which then broadcasts the image to other points throughout the building so people along the way know I'm expected and allowed to be there, then I was given a visitor badge. It seems like a pain in the butt, but I'd prefer a pain in the butt over losing my kid any day.

Here you just walk in but they have locked double doors after you enter & you have no choice but to enter the office. I know a maniac with a gun could shoot through & be in. In VA at the schools, the doors were all locked & you have to ring the bell to get in. After they'd ring the bell you were free into the school (they told you to enter the office but honestly if you are a maniac, you'd just bypass it). Right now, 2 of my boys go to school across the street from our house (we live on a military base, which some people feel they are completely safe..not me) & our oldest is about 30 minutes away (give or take..depends on traffic). Last year we had an incident at the middle school where it was found that a student brought a gun to school. I was so freaked out till my middle son came home that day & I think I hugged him for a good 10 minutes. He was yapping to me to let him go. What has happened to our world these days??

A few years ago the little girl I nannied for was sick and I had to pick her up. I buzzed at the front door, no questions who I was or what I was doing there. Went to the office and asked for her and they have me her! I had my ID out and they were like you don't need that! I could have sent my sisters who knew the little girl... I was quite appalled!!!!

Let me just say...I am not critizing or judging anyone. I am all for keeping our kid's safe but the day my school need's prison level measure's to do so is the day I will quit my job, plant a garden and home school. Sorry but part of the reasoning is that a couple of you are already living that and state, it sure don't mean your kid's are safe. Home School!!!!
