Every year for family and friends I make homemade dog treats. I am by no means domestic. I have to cook for my guys at work daily so ummm..I really dont cook too much for myself. But this time of year I become Suzy Homemaker...not that I relish that title but it does fit blah!
Anyways I just finished my 4th batch of treats this morning. This one goes to the workers and Vet at the shelter where I volunteer. Tomorrow is one more batch for all the dogs at the shelter for Christmas I did make some human treats that I shared as well but to me they arent as fun and satisfying as the doggie treats lol

I cook for my kids. If I didn't have them we'd be eating a whole lot of peanut butter and jelly sandwiches in my house! I can't say that cooking is my favourite thing but I've learned to hate it less over the years. lol I always enjoyed baking much more than cooking. Especially now with my 2 little girls, they LOVE making cookies and decorating them. It's a big deal for them. I cherish these days (I have to remind myself of this when we're actually baking and they're making a mess! lol) because I know they will be grown and "too cool" to bake or do anything else with mom soon! I would like to try some homemade doggie treats too. Does anyone have a good, simple recipe? Duke will eat just about anything... lol |

You can find some good recipes here. Granted some of these arent gran free one thing to consider. I personally like the Peanut Butter Biscuit recipe its easy. If you dont want to add cornmeal I just put more oatmeal in instead
OH one other thing I substitute coconut oil for the vegetable oil to make it a bit better for them Homemade Dog Treat Recipes!

Ah, coconut oil to replace vegetable oil.... Clever! On those rare occasions when I use oil, I always use olive oil and I don't taste the difference myself nor have others mentioned it. When you use coconut oil, is it noticeable? I mean can you taste the difference?
If it were completely up to me, our house would be semi vegetarians with fish probably being the only meat I'd cook and I don't mean fried either..... Really don't care much for fried, breaded foods... I much prefer veggies and fruits, cheeses and breads over just about anything else but my guys are all meat eaters I do like to bake and I never mind standing in the kitchen for hours on end slicing veggies and fruits but I really don't like to cook. Occasionally I'll make home made soups, stews or chili but beyond that, no thank you! Thank goodness hubby likes to cook or he and the boy would probably go hungry half the days out of the week. There's something about cooked meals that just seems so heavy to me and more times a week than not, I'll forgo dinner altogether. My FIL is fond of all the foods that are just plain bad for you and I hate that he brings these things into my home and my child revels in the fat, carbohydrates, sugars and all the things that you don't want your child eating... Sigh! However, my hubby says it makes his daddy happy and as his quality of life is very diminished, I've agreed to look the other way for the time being. Bah sorry I get side tracked easy.... Anyways, I was wondering if it would be overly noticeable if I used the coconut oil for my baked Christmas goodies. I sort of have this idea of a slight flavoring in my head .... I mean I can almost taste it just talking about it... Seems I've had some dish or another that coconut oil was used in. I'm thinking I've had it in a mango dip..... Oh don't mind me, my brain is wandering thinking about where I've tasted it before lol... |

Myself I havent tried cooking for myself with coconut oil. I imagine there would be a taste. I must say I tried the dog treats with the coconut oil but didnt taste much like coconut. All I could taste was the peanut butter. I always sample any of the doggie treats...none are horrible but of course not sweet so not so good for me lol

I use coconut oil when cooking/baking- it is a lot healthier. But depending on how much you use you can taste it slightly so be careful what you use it in. When baking I use it in pretty much everything- pancakes, muffins, cookies etc. In savory dishes I use it in things like thai and curry dishes, soups, cous cous/quinoa dishes, other wise we I use extra virgin olive oil. We don't eat meat or dairy products, occasionally we will eat fish but not very often- coconut oil is good to cook fish in (salmon, sea bass, shrimp etc.). Happy cooking!

I like the yogurt and peanut butter frozen treats. They make great rewards after our training sessions at home. I make them in tassy cups to make more! Last week I made a great with unsweetened applesauce, they were ok, kind of bland for my liking with no sugar. I've also made a pumpkin treat which I think me and my nephews ate more than the dogs!! I'll have to get those recipes for you gals:-)
