by the way, the 10 y.o. boy riding in the sled, in the first picture, is afflicted with cerebal palsy and that is his Dad driving the sled. The sled/dog team owner let him drive it briefly. It was the boy's first ride ever in a dog sled, let alone many other things he's not experienced and he was thrilled. It was very, very touching that the local Siberian Husky Rescue arranged this for him.

I love watching animals do something they love!
Huskies were meant to pull. You can literally see the joy on their faces when they're pulling a sled! The commands Gee and Haw are the same commands a lot of people use when driving a horse and buggy |

What got me hooked on dog sledding was meeting Susan Butcher by chance, after she had won 4 Iditarods. I spent about an hour with her in a major airline lounge, both of us waiting for our next flight from Seattle, to Alaska. I have to say, she was singularly one of the most impressive women I had ever met! Down to Earth and clearly had her priorities set right. She was loathe to be away from home and in the lower 48 but she had to be, because of receiving some high honor (can't remember what it was) that she had to attend and give a speech at. She was desperate to get home, back to her cabin and tend to her huge pack of mush dogs. By the way, her cabin was out in the middle of nowhere, her nearest neighbor was something like 50 miles away, she told me.
I was very sad to hear that she passed from Leukemia about 6 yrs ago. Here is a great couple minute tribute to her, if you want to see what I'm talking about.
