I got mine at 6 weeks (no breeder, just a couple whose boxers had an oops and they wanted to get rid of the puppies ASAP or take them to the pound) and he is definitely chewing monster. They told me he was 8 weeks when I got him but he was actually 6 (they called later to tell me they had made a "mistake" in counting the weeks - had I known that I wouldn't have taken him). I really think he would have been better if he had been with his littermates longer. I'm scared he's going to learn the hard way when he plays with an adult dog that doesn't appreciate the nipping.

We have made sure to bring Tyson around tolerant dogs so he doesn't have a bad experience. Although I was sort of hoping one of his playmates would correct him and Tyson would clue into the fact nipping is annoying but they didn't. As long as he doesn't play with aggressive dogs (unbalanced dogs) then he should be fine, nothing wrong with an older dog telling the puppy to back off and enough is enough.

He has playdates with several of my friends' adult dogs and they are VERY tolerant of him, which I almost think encourages him. I wish one of them would gently correct him so that when he would learn that not every dog is going to tolerate it.

Gracie was 4th among 6 littermates. We got her right at 8 weeks and as far as I know she was held and touched a lot along with having her littermates to play with until we got her. Sugar has been wonderful as far as letting Gracie know when she's being too mouthy, putting her back in place. As for us, she thinks we're playing with her when we correct her and gets even more excited.
I've been hearing the same thing from previous puppy owners that the nipping will eventually subside after they lose their milk teeth and that's roughly by +/- 16 wks. WE CAN'T WAIT!!!

Woooo hooooo Tyson will be 16 weeks on Feb 22nd. Although all teeth are still intact. I heard that they fully have all adult teeth by 6 months. So worst case scenario is 2 more months of this! I am starting the count down today! Will let you know when I see a change and at what age.

Dillon is the same way, every time I pull away or walk away or tell him no he gets even more nippy. I have finally learned that if I put on shoes I don't care about and a jacket (to protect my arms from his sharp teeth) and I just sit there without moving and let him gnaw on me without trying to get him to stop he gets bored after about 45-60 seconds and then I can play with him without him trying to bite me. Might be worth a try to get through the next few months.

Last night things were better than they have been! He was trying to bite us and we said "Tyson go get your ball" and he quickly diverted his attention to finding his ball. I can now see the light on the other side of the tunnel!!!!!!!!
We are going to Puppy Kindergarten tonight for the first time also, that should be very interesting! |

Wow, us too, JennTyson. YAY!!!
![]() =D> A friend told me his vet told him to push his finger(s) into his puppy's mouth until puppy does a little gag reflex, he did it and his puppy pushed his hand away from it's mouth and wasn't interested in using his hand as a chew toy. When puppy did nip, it wasn't as severe of a bite thereafter. Well, I was skeptical but I tried it anyway. Guess what? It actually worked. It was soooo nice last night. She was more into her loofah dog chew toy and her Valentine teddy. She is such a good girl and so smart! Anyway, Congrats! We have also enrolled in Puppy 101, an obedience class, at our local spca. I figured why not? I can use all the training help I can get.
