Default Help with listening to directives PLEAAASE!!!

Hello folks my name is Jeremy. Im a proud owner of a beautiful boxer. His name is Rocco. Heres a few pics.

Rocco is really gentle with my kids. I love that about him. Here he is passed out with my 10 month old son Cody.

And here he is snuggled up to my step son Logan.

And heres my pride and joy. My lil miny me Cody.

Rocco is a great dog. He just does not listen very well. Well when hes inside the house he listens ok, I have a chain link fenced in yard which is where we let him roam freely to handle his business. Heres the problem. He sits out there and barks at anything that moves. Mainly the squirls and rabbits. Which i understand. He wants to chase them. He barks so much that my neighbor have started to dislike me because of my dog. So as a result I only let him out a few times a day. When i go to let him in he will usually be waiting by the back door. So when i open it up to let him in he runs down the steps and back into the yard barking. As if to say come catch me if you can. And i have tried, but hes far to fast for me. SO this routine will go on for hours until finally he decideds hes ready to come in, In which case im pretty steamed up. So ive been putting him in a empty closet as a form of punishment. This is not working. I want a dog that listens when told to come. For now im gonna let him out on a run line so i can catch him when he trys to juke me. But i could really use some sound advice on how to deal with this prob. Rocco is around 20 months old. Male and is not nutured yet. Which i plan to do soon as i can afford too. Thanks for any help.

First couple of things...welcome and Rocco is soo handsome!

IMO, I would not let Rocco be playing outside by himself. He might be getting bored out there alone, and that could be why he is barking so much. Perhaps you could spend some time playing games like fetch with him. As for recall, practice, practice, practice with high value treats, like real chicken...or whatever else he really loves. You can use a long line, say come, reel him in, and praise/treat. I would not let him outside unsupervised tied up ...can cause aggression, injuries, etc.

He is beautiful! Sounds to me like he is bored and needs stimulated. Have you tried taking him for walks daily and playing games with him in the yard? My dogs bark a lot and seem to get in trouble if I do not give them the attention they really need. When I walk them on a regular basis and spend time with them in the yard they behave better. Otherwise sitting in the house all day laying around gets old. They have tons on energy they need to get out. Usually when they run away from you they are playing the "chase me game". It's fun for him, not so much for you.

Thankyou so much for the reply Lailabelle. Im sorry i forgot to mention that i have to tend to my 11 mo old son whole my wife is at work during the day. My job is seasonal, and being its winter i cant just chase him around the yard. I have put him on a good colar and run line in the yard and i just did this today. But i do think he will respond well it. He does however get alot of excersize. I do walk him daily and sometimes twice a day. Usally 1-2 miles a day. I also take him to the local dog park often. He for the most part is a really well behaved dog. just needs more attn. thanks.

Rocco needs more exercise I think...they are hyperdogs.

If I skip 1 day with Valant (had a very virulent cold a month ago) its not the same dog...at all!

I agree with everyone, Rocco is just bored. I can tell you one thing, dont chase him in the yard because then you ARE playing his game and he is having a great time.

Teach him to focus on you, then he will listen to what you are saying. Use treats and any word that you want when you want him to focus. I just used Zeus' name, so he knows when I say his name to look at me. Then you can get them to do anything that he has already learned. You just have to get there attention because without it Rocco will not listen.

I am no expert but thats my .02 ohhhhh and I have watched a lot of "its me or the dog" LMAO hey, her methods are so impressive and work so well.
