Default Going Into Heat...?

Hi, I'm new here and have a few questions. I've had Boxers and they're my favorite breed but this is the first time I've had a female Boxer along with my male Boxer. She is 10 months old now and her vulva (guess that's the correct terminology for a dog) is swelling. There's no blood but sometimes a discharge and my male has been sniffing her more lately but he's not trying anything on her. Does this mean she's going into heat or in heat now? I don't want to get her fixed yet. I want her to have 1 litter of pups but NOT until she's 2 years old. So, how hard is it to keep your other dog (male) away from your female while she's in heat? I mean, they're both indoor dogs who sleep with us at night so I could never put one outside and leave them! I've thought about putting a kennel in our dining room when she goes into heat and swapping them out in it every couple hours or so (to keep them apart). Is this something that some of you have done or have been through before? Will this work? I was also thinking of putting one in the kennel at night while the other sleeps with us at night and the next night alternate with the other dog so they don't feel like they're being punished or something. Anyone have ideas for me?
Thanks!

I don't have any answers for you other than totally keeping them separated for the entire time. There are a lot of accidental breeding out there. The first boxer in my signature once lay on the ground hoping to let a dachshund get to her that had somehow gotten into my parents chain linked fenced yard. Fortunately my mother caught them in time.

Hi,
Well, she just started bleeding last night! I saw where someone on here suggested using a size 6 baby diaper so I bought some but they don't fit that great on her. So far, my male is still sniffing her on & off but hasn't tried anything. I'm home all the time so I can watch them, but would like to make sure things are a little more safe. I've heard horror stories of how a male dog jumped through a glass window just to get to the female outside. That freaks me out! Lol! I also heard heat is one week into it, then one week in heat, then one week coming out of heat. If she just started bleeding last night, does that mean that is the first day of actually being in heat (middle week)? Trying to figure out how long she has left to go. If anyone else has suggestions, please let me know!
Thanks!

I would keep them completely separated, unless you are able to watch over them every second. In regards to alternating them at night in your bed, I personally would not allow the female to sleep with me or on any furniture while she is in heat. It is just asking for more of a mess to clean. Good luck

Hi,
Thanks for the reply.
What about suggestions on indoor kennels? I'm sure they're very pricey. Does anyone have suggestions where to buy them cheap or rent them? I'm not even sure that places rent them at all. Anyone know? After this, we will probably make one but time isn't on my side right now!

the diaper works well, if your girl has a longer nub then you can use some heavy duty scissors to cut a slit for the nubby... that will help.

try having her stand on all fours. open the diaper all the way with the "front" of the diaper on the top of her rump and the back of the daper (with the velcro tabs) on the belly. then you pull each side around and tighen to fit her size. add slit for nubs if needed. Lolas nubby isnt too long so I dont cut the slit. I wish I had my camera I would take some pics for you but I left it at our hunting camp she can sleep with you if you put the diaper on her correctly.

try wal-mart.com for prices or any pet store. the prices range but you will need a bigger one and of course the bigger they are the more $

I have heard of accidental breeding right through a kennel, so if you crate your female and leave your male loose, you are taking a chance she may be bred, if it were me i would crate them both to be 100% safe or at least crate the male so he has no contact with your female at all for the next 21 days, i have been breeding boxers for 23 years and i have allways kept my dogs separated when the females are in season, all it takes is a split second when you are not paying attention and they're bred, why take that chance, also try to keep your male at the other end of the house or furthest away from your female so the smell of the female is not as strong, you don't want to drive your male crazy.

Well I applaud your decision to wait to breed her until she's 2....What health tests do you plan on doing if you don't mind me asking??? Next...usually the bitch is in heat for 3 weeks...and usually it's the second week she'll be ready to accept a male...I used doggy bloomers from Dr's Fosters and Smith (??something like that)...they work great...I'd buy at least 2 pairs though...there's also some kind of male doggy bloomer for additional protection..The second week of the heat cycle is very difficult, especially if you have an intact male in the household also....My male was CRAZED and all he wanted to do was hump during this time period....and the female isn't much help either....because all she wants to do is hump also....And having 2 sex crazed dogs in the house isn't much fun either...because they'll act like you're killing them by trying to keep them separated....NewCastle practices the 2 door method...meaning 2 doors must be between the dogs at all times....dogs can mate through fences, kennels....Good Luck!

This is just a recipe for disaster - best thing I would suggest is to find someone to take your male for a bit until her season is over. Its not worth the risk. Also not only age wise you have to worry about breeding her, but health too. If you are not familar with what a heat is then I am guess that you are not too familar with what health tests should be required before you breed your girl - age is just not a deciding factor.

Please find someone to take your male, or keep them in separate parts of the house without any contact. Also please read thru the breeding sections of this forum if you are convinved on breeding your female.

Good luck and I pray that nothing happens.
