Default How much should I feed my puppy? and how often?

I have just been wondering how much I should actually feed Cami? She is 4 months old now, I have been feeding her about 1 cup in the morning and 1 cup in the evening of Science Diet puppy food. I know boxers are supposed to be lean, and she is skinny, you can see her ribs. I just dont want to be under-feeding her! My other dog, Dex, well he's a small toy breed so he doesnt eat very much and I am used to his diet! It seems like I can feed her, she will devour her food up in no time and I have to hold her while Dex is eating otherwise she will eat all of his food as well..so then I think maybe she is still hungry?! My boyfriend thinks I am feeding her too much because he doesnt want a fat dog...but I tell him that she's a growing puppy and they eat a lot! So if anyone has some good ideas or tips for me that would be greatly appreciated! I just want to make sure my baby is not being starved or over-fed!! Thanks!!

I found that our little girl eats more to stay at a healthy weight than what the bag says. The bag says she should eat about 2 cups a day but I find that she eats more like 2 and a 1/2 to almost 3 cups a day (including canned food). Our little girl is 11 weeks old and they should be on a 3x a day feeding schedule but our little one never adheres to a schedule like that she eats 2x a day. I would maybe try giving her maybe a 1/4 cup more than what you are feeding her now during her mealtimes if she seems to be so hungry still.

You might also want to look at the stickys on good brands of dog food there might be a healthier option for your little girl. Our baby is on wellness puppy and is doing great!

2 Cups is adequate with water. I do a 2 parts food with 1 parts water.

But please please please don't feed your dog Science Diet. This happens to be the worst food for the money. Plus I believe they use carcinogenic preservatives.

Look at the stickies about dog food. Or you can do your own independent research on the internet.

May I suggest two particular dog foods if you're going the kibble route? I suggest Orijin Puppy or Innova EVO. Orijin is what I feed my boxer puppy merely because it's made in Canada and I'm Canadian. I would have picked EVO just as equally.

Both have customer appreciation programs too.

Alternatively, you can go the RAW route. I'm not too familiar with RAW diets so all I can say is look this subject up in the stickies or on the internet.

Again please don't feed your dog Science Diet!!! PLEASE!!!

Thank you for information! I guess I did not know that Science Diet was bad for dogs. The vet we have in town here strongly encourages it, thats why I have always gone to that. Luckily we have just about ran out of food so I am going to go buy some more this afternoon. I will try another brand suggested!

I will try a little bit more than normal. I usually do sneak her in a little bit more than 2 cups per day. Usually 1 cup in the morning and 1 1/2 cups in the evening because she just seems so hungry, plus she usually finishes up what my other dog doesnt eat hehe.

Thanks again for the information! I will try some of those options!

I feed Duke 3 times a day, one cup each. I just switched to Innova puppy. EVO might have to much protein for a puppy. Be careful switching foods. Duke is going through a bout of diarrhea. From possibly a combination of switching dog foods and feeding marrow bones. We are leaning toward the marrow bones. Go slow, it seems some boxers have very sensitive tummies.

If you switch to a premium brand you won't have to feed as much because of the very high nutrient content. So keep that in mind

Science Diet is made by Hill's and they get veterinarians to promote it. Vets get a 'commission' if they sell their product. That is why they promote and swear by the food.

Actually, my girlfriend feeds her pit bull Science Diet because her vet said to. I told her to switch since I did the research and she said she'd consider it

Oh and if you're going to switch be sure to mix the old food with new for a while so the puppy can adjust to the higher nutrient content.

Good luck to you

Thank You! I think I am going to try the Innova puppy, I have enough science diet left to mix it with the new stuff so hopefully she will get used to it, and like it!
I think I will switch my chihuahua/terrier to that brand as well and see how he does on it!
What is the RAW diet I see people posting about? I've read some places about people cooking for their boxers and stuff, but I wasnt sure if that was the same thing!

Thank you so much for the advice/info! I really appreciate it!

I echo what everyone said about Science Diet. It is not a good food at all. You might try Taste of the Wild also.

Be sure and note that most of the recommendations you will get for dog food won't be sold at places like PetSmart. You will have to find a place that sells these brands.

Ok that is good to know. I am wondering if they might sell these types of foods at a place like a Farm and Home or something. I will have to do some searching! The bad thing about living in a small town...haha we dont have a lot to choose from!

RAW is feeding your dog raw food. Like raw beef, chicken, lamb, duck, ostrich, buffalo, and offal meats (innards) and whole eggs with the shell. It also includes RMB - Raw Meaty Bones.

It's very different from cooking.

Check out Innova's web site and you can find a dealer near you.

Oh and you are most welcome - I'm very happy to help out.
