First I have to say that both of my babies are now at their goal weight! The vet had us bring their servings down to 2 cups/day each, and now Zoe is a healthy 60 lbs and Bentley is right around 65. Such a proud mommy
That being said, they don't seem like they are getting completely full from the food we are feeding them - currently Blue Buffalo Large Breed Adult Chicken & Brown Rice. They have been at 2 cups/day for a few months now, so it's not just an adjustment thing. Wondering if anyone else has experienced this with Blue Buffalo? We usually feed around 8:30am and 4:00pm, and lately the dogs have been hounding me for food starting around 12:00pm. I've heard of adding green beans in with their food for a low-calorie filler... thoughts? I have been wanting to change them over to the grain-free Blue Buffalo formula, so I think we will try that with their next bag. Zoe has what seems like an allergy on her feet (sporadically), and sometimes Bentley's stomach will be so upset in the morning he won't eat until that night (this happens about once or twice a week, and when it does, you can hear his stomach making gurgling noises from across the room). Do you think grain-free will help with these issues? PS- if anyone can tell me how to make Zoe's picture smaller in my signature that would be great too! |

Instead of feeding them 1 cup twice a day, I would feed them both cups once a day instead. That way they feel like they ate a complete meal instead of two nice snacks. You could also soak the kibble with a bit of broth or water so its more filling in their bellies.

I agree with what Kari said, try and give them their entire meal at the same time.
Bosley is currently down to eating really only once a day. Not that I made him do that...his choice. His food is out all day but he chooses to only eat around 6:30 at night. He's my little creature of habit lol 6:30= dinner time for him. |

Obviously I am totally missing something here...or kona is severely overfead!
2 cups a day doesn't seem like very much...is raw food different? Kona gets 5 - 1/2 pound full meal raw patties plus 2 chicken backs a day!! He is constantly crying for more like I am starving him( checked him for parasites ...none). Don't mean to hijack the thread |

Bos gets about 2.5-3 cups of food a day plus extras.... He just chooses to eat it all at once as opposed to two meals lol I have no idea how much to feed on raw... isn't it some percentage of body weight? Kona probably cries for more because it's yummy lol |

Does Kona look like he could lose a few lbs? Every dog is different. I have a 70lb male that eats 2.5lbs daily to maintain weight and a 70lb female that only requires 1.5lbs or she starts to gain weight. With Raw we need to make individual adjustments.

Yes, exactly. We were free feeding at first, then were told during a training class to set a schedule for them as part of the discipline. They adjusted fine to being on a schedule, but were at 2 cups in the morning 2 cups in the evening each at that time. When we took them to the vet, they confirmed what we already kind of knew from just looking at them, that they needed to shed a few pounds. They recommended tapering down to 1.5 cup in the morning and at night, then reassessing. When we went back in, despite less food and more exercise, they were still not at their goal weight, so the vet decreased again to 1 cup in the morning and 1 at night. They do get extras throughout the day also, and lately we have increased to 1.5 in the morning and 1 at night.
