So, when we first got Bruno we put him on BB Freedom Puppy. He seemed to do pretty well on it, but had some what I thought pretty potent gas and would about once a day have a bit of a loose stool. I thought maybe he was having a small sensitivity to the chicken. That combined with an interest of getting a bit more bang for the buck, and after hearing good things about them, we started moving him to Earthborn Holistic about 1 1/2 weeks ago. Specifically their Meadow Feast flavor which is lamb based grain free all life stages food.
We did about 25% increase every 2-3 days and have had him on 75% for about a week partly because we were trying to use up the remains of the BB food. Since Thursday morning we've had him on 100% because the 2nd 6.6lb bag was getting low and I wanted to see how he did on 100%. He's done very well up through 75%. Today (Friday 2nd day of 100% ) however he had some very loose stool after dinner. He went as normal, but the end was soft, then he turned right back around and went again and it was more like the "pudding" consistency I've heard mentioned around here. I'm not sure what to make of this. I don't know if it's a random thing, related to giving him his monthly heartworm med on Thursday, or if he's actually not going to do well on the Earthborn or at least on lamb as a protein. His current bag will not last through the day tomorrow so I need to figure out what to do. Take a chance that he's still in transition or it was random and go ahead and buy a 28lb bag. Go back to the BB. Or try a different flavor of Earthborn. We went with the lamb based meadow feast because it is within 1% of the protein level of the BB Freedom where all the others are in the 30's like the BB Wilderness or TotW type products. I read from one person here that their vet told them that teething can cause loose stool too. I'm wondering if maybe this is what's going on because Bruno is definitely losing puppy teeth and getting the adult ones in. We found 3 larger puppy teeth last weekend.

Teething van cause loose stools. I would get a small bag in case it is the food. I wouldn't change protien base without sloe transition like you wer doing. Have you tries some probiotics or giving a little yogurt?

Thanks, I'll pick up one more 6.6lb bag and see how it goes then. Was hoping to do the 28 since it's obviously a better price at $52 vs. $16.50 for only 6.6lbs but better to go smaller and see how he does obviously.

I would purchase the 28lb bag and see if things improve. Som dogs need time to adjust, if half way through the 28lb bag you arent happy, then you have enough to help transition over to another kind.

LOL oops, well had already purchased the small bag. At least I saved a few bucks. The Earthborn rep was at the store today giving out coupons so it was only about $13.50 instead of about $16.50 for a small bag.

Yes he may just need more time to adjust. Another possibility is that you are overfeeding.
Duke seemed to be hungry all the time (and still does! lol) so we upped his intake by a cup a day (the bag said 3 1/2 - 6 cups a day). We were giving him 4 cups and upped it to 5 cups. Well, after a week or so of pudding poops we put him back down to 4 cups and it's just perfect now! |
