Default Bed, crate pad, do it your self....

That is the question! Last nov (2012), I bought Wyatt a new bed, beginning/mid jan someone/thing destroyed it! Attachment 69313 somehow a "ninja" unzipped the cover and broke open the other part which had the bedding in it! Let me tell you, WHAT A MESS!!! So I refused to buy him a second $50+ bed! (First one I gave to old boss bc he didn't use it and was too big for crate).

So anyways now that my bf and I live 230 miles apart and only see each other on the weekends we take turns. Last weekend he was here, this weekend I'll go out there. Anyways I crate Wyatt at night (until he whines around 3-6 am). But I feel bad bc I know he's prob cold, lonely and not comfy. Right now there's an old throw rug, and old towel and his blanket in his crate... Not very squishy like my bed:-(

So I figured for Christmas Santa will bring him a new bed. But I've been going back and forth between just a crate pad like the fuzzy sheep wool looking ones, a self heating crate pad (not very thick but will keep warm), or buying a chunk of 2-3 inch thick foam from the craft store, whatever size would fit in his old bed cover which was perfectly in tack after the ninja attack. Any thoughts, opinions, experience?

He doesn't go in his crate often, but maybe if it was comfy he would use it more.

Thanks:-)

I had the same issue with Maggie. She even disintegrated a kong bed in one day! I changed her to fleece blankets for a couple years and last year made her a thin bed with fleece and a thin layer of batting. Still not cushy but she hasn't eaten it.

@BigDaddy does he sleeps on an actual red kong or a kong bed? Ha ha ha!

@boxerlover84, I have fleece sheets for my bed, I love them, it's like sleeping on a cloud!

I should add Wyatt doesn't get crated anymore hen we leave and I guess that's why it's an issue now.

The self heading pads look nice, but they are thin like a blanket and when you lay on them, you body heat generates back to you or something like that. Our min pin has an electric heating pad that stays room temp all the time then once you lay on it, it warms up. She can pretty much be found in her crate at all times in the winter!

There is a nice dog bed I've been wanting to get him but it's seriously like $200!!!! It's from animals matters. Here's a pic o him when he was 3 months old with the ex's other boxer his mother stole from him in one of those beds. Attachment 69329 they are super soft and washable.

Ugh, the stress our babies put us through!

Hi Wyatts mom. Maybe he has outgrown the bed destroying. Porter did. However, when Porter was in bed destruction mode I got him a primo pad (really has been indestructable where he had managed to kill every other supposedly "indestructable bed". It is foamy for a little support, but not really snuggly, but I didn't worry about him eating it. It is now in the crate with Fiona, who is in bed destructo mode. She isn't as bad as Porter was, so I can cover the vinyl with a blanket. Here is the link. Vinyl dog floor protection pads- Primo Pads

Dutch has never "officially" had his own bed per say... He has his crate which has only blankets in there and he has always slept in bed with us when poem try training was complete. Now that he is 14 months now he is really hogging the bed according to the boyfriend! Our pit Chino has a bed but not Dutch. For Christmas I ordered them both one of those Orthopedic pet beds. I know the 15 yr old pit will just love it, I hope Dutch doesn't decide to destroy his. He doesn't really bother Chinos now do odds are he will b fine with his. I would kill him if his bed ended up like that one in the cage! ~Misty~

Oh I was def mad, but more mad at my dad for not putting toys/chews in with him! But I have to be grateful he let me move back home with a 4.5 month old puppy, and help in crating him. Now when I go to my bf's for the weekend he feeds him while I'm gone.

Those damn ninjas are so awful!

Another vote here for the Primo pad. Bruno has one as per recommendations here earlier in the year. He officially has the title of Bruno "the destroyer of beds" after he destroyed a nice thick "egg crate" type bed from Groupon, a Kong heavy duty crate pad (chewed a hole in the "bumper" on the 3rd day exposing the polyfil), and destroyed $250 worth of K9 Ballistics ortho beds at the pet sitter back around June or July.

I suspect he has grown out of the phase finally as he's had a Petsmart "house brand" ortho foam bed for a few weeks now. However that is not in his crate, it's on the living room floor for when he is not crated but he's shown no signs of trying to do anything other than sleep all evening on it lol. The Primo pad is of course still in his crate zip tied to the bottom and intact.

Apparently bed destroying runs in the family. One of his littermates who also goes to the same doggy boarding hotel (fancy kennel) is no longer allowed to have beds. Apparently he went through few lol.
