Japanese Legislation Gives New Meaning To “Till Death Do Us Part”

It’s sad, but happens frequently – people dump older dogs at shelters because they’re not puppies anymore. Let’s follow Japan’s lead and mandate care for the lifetime of dogs.

At some point in our lifetime many of us will have cared for an aging pet that is no longer able to fetch a stick, bound up the stairs or simply climb up onto the sofa to snuggle beside us. This isn’t a sad time; it’s a thoughtful time that allows us to at long last give back to someone who has brought years of joy to our life.
When our Jake was winding down we ensured someone was always on hand to help him up the family room stairs and that every smooth surfaced floor in the house had “stepping stone” mats that he could use to cross the room without wiping out. These are the little things you do when you love an aging pet and apparently pet owners in Japan not only agree but have taken it to the next level.

Have you ever been to Japan and lived there? I would not use them as a good example, if you knew all the other weird stuff that goes on there.

I think there comes a time, when a dog's life is done and needs to be put to sleep - even though we hate it. To do otherwise could actually be considered more cruel. We have to remember, it is dog, not a human.

I always find it strange also, that some people that advocate this, do not feel the same way towards humans. Not saying this is the OP's position, not at all, just what I have found.

A dog is a dog is a dog. It lives a good life, we get joy/work/companionship from the dog. But, when it gets to a certain age, and can no longer function and the vet bills become extreme, it is time to put our furry friend down and continue onwards.

At least "dog" is not on the menu! We all have to chose. For me a lifetime of devotion is worth a lifetime of care!

We know gong in that our dogs don't live as long as we do!

Struddell could no longer walk at 8 years, with 24/7 care, she made it to 10 yrs. DM, I would not want to do that again!! But if I needed to I would.

Pretty much as simple as that for me! :)
