Vaccines and other stuff

At Amor's follow up visit to the vet, the dr wanted to do the leptosperosis (sp) and the Lyme vaccine. I declined both at this time as I know nothing about them and wanted to research more. I did read some where that neither are necessary and that the leptosperosis can actually be harmful to boxers.

They did give her the bortadella vaccine injectable version. They said that even though she isn't in dog daycare any more she still goes to grooming, is exposed to other dogs in the pet store, on walks, etc.

Also, is it really necessary to give your dog a dewormer? I thought you would only need to give that if they had worms.

Also, has any one heard of a recessed vulva? I thought Amor might have a uti because she is constantly licking her genitals and some days goes out to urinate every couple hours. I got some medicated wipes because they said to clean around it daily.

Also, Amor is finally on probiotics. Crossing my fingers this helps all the itchiness. I got her started on some from the vet called advita. I will be ordering some, if it helps, instead since I know there are excellent ones out there. My dad thinks I'm crazy.

I also double checked with the vet regarding making sure no ace is used for her teeth cleaning on July 2nd. It is in her chart. Although anesthesia is covered under the wellness plan, I will have to pay 30 for it because it covers ace not the alternative. Fine with me, I would rather pay that amount than take a chance on ace. They will use something that starts with M.

How long before I should see the probiotics at work? And what kind of probiotics do you all use if you do.

I don't do lepto, lyme or bordatella.
Lepto and lyme are easily treated if caught early and the bordatella vaccine is basically useless. Kennel cough is the equivalent of the common cold and easily treated.

I have been told my Maggie has has a recessed vulva by one vet (hence she had recurrent uti's - 3 in one year)

Good call on refusing to let them use Ace :)

I dont do Lyme Lepto and Bordatella. I recently wrote a blog post on Lepto if you want to read it. Matter of fact the owners of the website I write for their female Boxer recently had surgery for a recessed vulva. Some require surgery some dont but I would try everything else first before surgery including a second opinion

Bordatella vaccine I have heard described as a solution looking for a problem! So yeah going forward just say "NO."

lepto, SAR dogs and most likely hunting dogs?,Essentially dogs out in the woods, are the ones most likely, to be exposed to contained waters. Get that one but for most of us just say no!

No idea on the lime thing, not a lot of ticks in the desert! :)

I don't think Amor is at a high risk factor for leptosperosis. She is almost always indoors, never left to just roam around outside, when she is outside I'm usually with her and we don't have standing water that she would be tempted to drink. I have yet to see any ticks on her. My parents haven't treated their dogs over the years and never had a problem with them. If I had known that bortadella want really necessary I would have declined.

My input on lepto was just for input on why "some" dogs need it. :)

Bortadella..yeah they got you on that one! Now you know!:)

Ticks depends on where you are and what you and your do do! I'm in agreement with the recommendations given!

You do need to talk to your vet about this however:

I'm thinking I may print out the info about ACE and take it to the vet. I've already spoken to them regarding not using the ACE on her. That is why I have to pay extra, because their protocol is to use ACE and they will need to use something different. I would rather pay 30 for something than take the chance on not having a dog in the end....no brainer there. I'm already going to be a nervous wreck the entire day until I know she is fine.

Have them mark the folder 'NO ACE" in red that's what my vet did!

There are two ways it can go! A good vet says "yeah no problem" and they charge the additional cost. :)

But not everyone lives in an area where they can just go to another vet! Medical is not my thing so the hi lights here fom a vet tech that works in a spay and neuter clinic and they did Boxers with the regular stuff!

A skilled and (Boxer) knowledgeable Vet could also say "we don't have an alternative to Ace here but in Boxers we use 30% less of the regular anesthetic we keep Boxers out of cardiac arrest." Most of us have a choice but if you have a Boxer in some parts of the county...maybe not??

A vet that says neither of the above and ask where you got your medical degree from??? Time to walk out the door, to them a dog is dog!

I do have a choice here, so yeah it was "NO" Ace for Struddell! But apparently it could be used safely by a "good Vet!"

Not a recommendation! Just stating what I was told by someone in the field. :)

I did verify that they had an alternative to ACE, that is why the additional cost. They told me what they would use instead...it started with M. They did put it in the computer and showed me it was there. I will also have them put it on the outside of the folder in red. They also have in her records the fact that she is allergic to bees. I am also going to ask to speak to the vet and vet tech or person giving the anesthesia the morning of and reiterate the no ACE. if they cannot, or will not accommodate she won't have it done. So far it seems that they will accommodate. My vet is not the one doing the cleaning.

There are plenty of alternatives to acepromazine so if it's a problem then you need to go to another vet! There are also medical conditions like hypotension which would make ace contraindicated, so your pup will not be the only dog they see that cannot have ace as a premed. Ace is generally safe for most patients, and is cheap, which is why it is often used as a premed for anesthesia. They are probably going to use medetomidine or midazolam instead, which are more expensive and hence the added cost.

Most vets or techs will tell you that the have used ace in boxers for their whole careers without any problem, and that is probably true, but doesn't mean they won't run into problems in the future. Boxers don't commonly have negative reactions to the drug, but if they have any pre-existing heart condition then it can potentially have devastating consequences. The veterinary pharmacology book that my vet uses says that ace has been shown anecdotally to have potential negative side effects in boxers, and that although there is little scientific evidence to back it up, the anecdotal evidence is enough to justify not using the drug in this breed. Especially with the numerous alternative drugs out there that could be used instead. It's one of those things where your dog would probably be fine if given the drug, but if something did happen, you would never forgive yourself so why take the risk.

I would rather pay the added cost than take the chance. I'm glad that I found out about not using ACE before this was done. When she was fixed I have no clue what was used since she was at a shelter then and we had no idea, nor did they, that she was part boxer. I still have no clue why a shelter would spay a puppy at 7 weeks old.

Shelter's used to adopted puppies and kittens out and make the adopter sign a contract agreeing to have the animal spayed or neutered at 6 months old. The problem was they had absolutely no way of enforcing this, so many of the animals were left intact, and would go on to give birth to more animals that would end up in the shelter. The number one mandate of most rescues is to reduce the population of unwanted pets, and since they can't force adopters to sterilize the animals, they choose to do pediatric sterilizations.
