Hosing Down

Well, Hank got really dirty yesterday. He was outside running around and playing, and cause of all the rain there is a lot of mud. We were at friends house, and Hank was having a great time. But, he got all covered in mud!

So took the hose, and hosed him down. At first it freaked him out and he was jumping all around. But, then he released it was not bad at all and then started to sit and could tell he actually liked being hosed off.

This morning though taking him to get his first professional bath/shampoo, nail clippings, ear cleaning, etc. at Pet Smart.

The other crazy thing Hank did yesterday, was when I went out to get the mail. Hank usually walks out with me, usually not on a leash (no traffic as the end of a very quite culdesac) Hank this time though decided to jump up and grab one of the pieces of mail and run off! He would not give it back and started chewing it. Fortunately it was a piece of junk mail. I was still pretty upset! If it would have been something important like a tax refund check, etc. ole Hank would have been looking for a new owner! :chair::crazy eye: Moral of this story, is keep the mail away from Hank!

Boxers are always in play mode! My Rocco loves to try to grab electronic devices out of your hand. This is where the "leave it" command becomes useful. And it is helpful to anticipate the bad behavior and give the command before they grab the off limits item. The other command to work on is "drop it." This is the command that helps save them and you a lot of trouble. For instance: If Hank grabs your refund check before you can say "leave it" you then move to "drop it" - before it gets shredded.

I found picking up a stick and waving it works well also. Hank cannot resist a good stick.

Hank is pretty good with leave it and drop it if he is on a leash. But, if he is off a leash, it is a free for all and he can go from docile to super playful mode in a heartbeat. I need to work on this with him, and train more on drop it/leave it and off leash training.

Ok - I may be pointing out the obvious but if your are waving a stick to get his attention his doggy brain will engage in play mode even more. Clear, consistent training is the answer. Start with the leave it and drop it commands on leash and then using high value treats move to off leash training. If you act all inconsistent and nuts so will Hank.

gives a new meaning to the dog ate my homework...lol
Mason hates the hose but Mackie likes it, he likes it when the is a small hole or at the connection of 2 hoses where it leaks, loves to drink it like a water fountain...
