Rolling around in tall grass?

I have noticed now over the last two week or so, something unique that Hank, the Boxer, likes to do.

When I am taking him on a walk, all of a sudden he will tug really hard on the leash - very very hard and want to go into the tall grass (about 3 foot high), flowers, weeds, etc. on the sides of the trail I am walking. He will walk in, the drop and roll around, lay there for a few seconds. Then he comes back out, shakes himself off, and continues to walk. If there is a slight incline, he will not only roll around, but when he lays down, let him self then just slide down on his back or side. He will do this maybe 1-3 times during a 30-40 minute walk.

I cannot understand what is he doing. Getting a good scratch? Just likes rolling around in the tall grass/weeds? He looks pretty happy doing it, so I let him. It is actually kind of funny, and I shake my head in bewilderment.

Any ideas why he likes this, doing this? Anyone else here have their boxer doing the same thing?

Amor seems to like to do that occasionally too. It's usually because one of the wild critters like a turkey or something has used our back yard as a toilet and she must like the smell. I don't like the smell or having to give a bath at night however. She certainly has a good time doing it though.

There are certain spots on our walks that Uhtred will do that -- just take off and frolic around. It's always the same spots. It's pretty funny. I decided those are his breaks. I let him do what he wants until we get to the end of those spots. Just another reason it's fun to own a boxer!

Be warned that when they roll around in the grass like that it's usually to rub around in something stinky!!

Duke doesn't normally do that but he was doing it the other day on our front lawn. He kept searching out a particular spot and rubbing himself on it. We couldn't figure out why since there was nothing visible. Well when I bent down to pet him I smelled it! Rancid urine! Blech!!!
