Side effects of anesthesia

So since she had the dental cleaning yesterday Amor has eaten next to nothing. I gave her food this morning after it soaked in water for a bit. I gave her half of the normal amount. She ate that and I waited an hour and then gave her a bit more. She had eaten next to nothing of her dinner tonight. She has vomited a couple times and has had diarrhea all day. I was at work so I don't know much or often. She has been whimpering and looking for me apparently. I'm wondering if she is experiencing pain in her mouth or a side effect of the anesthesia. I've got some white rice cooking and sent someone to the store for beef baby food since she is allergic to chicken and can't have that.

Any suggestions or other ideas?

Anesthesia can cause digestive upset in some dogs. Did they do any extractions or was it just a regular cleaning? She shouldn't be in much pain if it was just a cleaning, but if she is in pain that may be why she is reluctant to eat. I would feed her boiled rice and chicken for a few days, then transition her back to her food and see how she does.

Anesthesia can cause digestive upset. I would look at her mouth if she lets you. Hot, red inflamed gums and any odor is not good. If she continues with this behavior I would suggest a follow-up at another vet.

I would also ask for the surgical sheet which should list all meds, procedures etc.

Perhaps they gave her something that is giving her a stomach ache.

I hope she is better today.

It is standard practice during dental cleanings to administer prophylactic IV antibiotics just after the dog is anesthetised, and to not give antibiotics to go home with. However, due to the prevalence of antibiotic resistance bacteria, some vets choose not to do this and only administer antibiotics if signs of infection occur.

She is doing much better today. Stools back to normal and she ate her regular food. No more whining or whimpering. She's a little restless but that could be in part because we have my uncle and his friend here for the weekend and her usual spots to sleep, ie. "her"chair are not available for her.

So glad she is better! They sometimes do experience pain after a cleaning for a day or two. Was telling my neighbor about your experience, she uses Banfield here and has been extremely pleased with them. She has three dogs and all are on their wellness plan. I guess we are lucky we have a good group here, not many changes in personal over the years either and maybe that makes a difference.

Amor's actual vet at banfield has been good. She had listened when I said no lepto or Lyme shot. She is working with me to find out the right food for Amor's food allergies/intolerance. She listens to my concerns and we try to come up with a solution. The only problem I had was being given a probiotic that contained poultry when she is allergic to chicken. Normally they don't refund, but I got a refund for it since it was the vet fault. They didn't have any other probiotic. It was that one vet that didn't listen to me. My old banfield location was great too. Her vet the was awesome. Both these two vets are older, perhaps that had some to do with it.
