My boxer is 6 months old and is usually pretty calm during the day. However, typically towards the end of the day he goes wild. Completely wild. Running, jumping, barking, and biting me. I believe it is just him playing rough because he does not do it to my wife. He has been to a trainer and knows commands, but once he gets this burst of energy there is no stopping him.

Is anyone else experiencing these outbursts. And have you found a solution?

Hank does the same, without the biting, near the end of the day. Even if during the day he gets 1-2 walks, plays ball several times, mental stimulation from training. Seems the "Boxer crazies" or "boxer burns" always come around later at night. I wonder if it has something to do with the moon coming out, getting dark?

I have now learned that before I go to bed, I take Hank out for a pee, and kick the ball around let him blow off some steam for about ten minutes. Then he will lay down and sleep 7-8 hours no issues.

Usually in the evening is when he picks up his sock monkey or stuffed Raccoon and goes crazy.

Boxer burn!!
Uhtred does it too. Usually around 7pm, but I notice that he also does it when he's happy. On weekends I get up early and take him for a walk and when we get home he tears downstairs to see my husband. Then he runs laps at full speed around the basement, up the stairs, around the upstairs, back down in the basement until he wears out. It cracks us up. He has a big dog grin on his face the whole time. We think he's just happy.

On a separate note, though, I do notice he bugs my husband to play with him more than he bugs me. That's because my husband plays more with him, and lets him play more roughly.

Boxer burns are one thing - those just involve running around like a lunatic. I think a lot of our boxers do that.

What the OP is describing seems to be a bit more that since their boxer is also biting and jumping on him.

Yes, its pretty normal..but you cannot not allow the jumping or biting, if that happens he loses his freedom...from day 1 we did not allow biting or jumping and ours is pretty good about it, never any biting..and he will just wiggle and bounce like crazy but the paws don't go on us. We use to yelp if he would bite, knee up if he would jump, use command off, and we have the trusted shaky can, which we would shake or throw as necessary. (empty soda can, dry. add exactly 15 pennies, and cover with duct tape so pennies do not fall out).

My guy is pretty sedate.. But everyday he does the "burn" out. Reminds me of a gazelle getting chased by a lion.. Terrible visual I know lol but as others have stated the bitting and jumping up need to be nipped in the butt.. He is young, what sort of exercise does he get on a daily basis?

We go for two 1 mile walks. Play fetch. Sometimes even a run. He was just neutered so we have not been able to do much of any of this. I don't mind energy but I need to stop the biting. He literally only nips at me. What can I do to stop the biting???

What can I do to stop the biting???

He should have been learning from day 1 that putting his mouth on you is not allowed. When he is acting out shake the can or have someone throw it at him. May take 3 or 4 times and he will stop and you may only have to shake the can. Don't say anything at first, let him associate the bad can with bad behavior, later you can add a command like NO or off

Re: Biting

Have you tried redirecting? Like putting a toy in his mouth, etc? Or just plain getting up and walking away; that works too. Uhtred is mouthy but he is learning... lately when he's mouthing and we tell him to stop he'll run get a toy and come back. That way we can keep playing, but with a buffer zone.

I say keep a spray bottle of water handy. If he bites at you, a quick squirt will turn his attention around real quick. My Rocky used to do his boxer burns everynight also but now that he's 2, he's settled down a lot. He gets a daily run though and it doesn't matter if we do 3 or 6 miles when we get home he always races around the yard like a lunatic, it seems to me to be a happy to be alive thing!! But I'm like "dude, aren't you tired yet?? LOL"

Roscoe went through a period - of a couple years - where every night when we would be winding down after the usual "burn", he would get on the couch where I was sitting and get very aggressive and lunge at me try and bite my neck. I knew of someone who had a friend who's Boxer bit his jugular vein and had to be put down because of it, so I was a little nervous when Roscoe would lunge at my neck. But I felt he was testing to see if I was still the alpha male, and I could always out maneuver him and he never tried to bite my hands when would fend him off. This went on and on, with friends who knew of it getting anxious that maybe I had a problem dog - but I just kept fending him off and then one day saw Cesar use his thumb and fingers in a cup of sorts and I just barely touched Roscoe like it was his mother biting him, and wa-la!, he would freeze immediately and cease lunging for my neck. Not many nights of that and he quit trying to see if I was still the alpha - ever since he sort of accepted that I was.
I tell people to try that thumb and finger cupping and simulating the mother's mouth biting them when they were pups, and everyone is amazed at how it works.

Man I sure am glad uhtred hates the spray bottle! It's my most effective training aid. the other day he was acting up and I held it up and showed it to him... the look on his face was priceless. He scrambled up, sat down and looked at me like "okay okay I'll be good!!"
