Summer field trips to Petco

I stopped by Petco yesterday and brought my boxer in with me. I noticed a few kids near the birds and fish. No big deal. I went to pay and looked up and we were literally surrounded by at least 20 4 to 5 year olds and 2 adults. The kids were being kids and getting exceptionally close and reaching out toward Roxy while yelling and screaming. An adult did finally tell them not to touch/grab/get too close to her but it took forever. The cashier said it was a field trip.

My boxer did really good...I asked her to sit and she did...and i positioned myself between her and the kids. I do not have children and I think she does not know to be gentle. I stopped letting kids under 5 pet her when she knocked over a toddler in the park and barked at him causing him to cry. She likes older kids though.

She definitely got a treat after that one! Needless to say I was a little overwhelmed. :crazyeye:

Boxers tend to either be excellent and very gentle with children, or see them as playmates and knock them over! lol

Sounds like you and her did great handling that situation. Also, don't be afraid to speak up and tell the kids not to pet her without asking first. Generally just having a "stranger" talk to them will stop them in their tracks. :)

Yea sounds like you handled the situation great! Sounds like a fun class trip too they experienced how they "should" act around dogs..wish more kids knew.

My guy just a few weeks ago knocked over a kid and tried ripping his shoes off... He was playing in his defense.. But the little boy didn't think so.. Dukes fantastic with people in general, just once they get down to eye level they're fair game lol
