Apartment Living?

Hello everyone,

Hoping to get some feed back from those who live with their boxers in apartment settings. I want absolutely no judgmental posts stating that boxers should not live in apartments. Apartment owners are more inclined to tag their pups out for walks and exercising then most people with backyards are.
On to my questions, my girlfriend and I have lived in a house with our boxer since she came in to our lives. She's always had access to a backyard, as well as multiple off-leash sites close by. Recently I acquired a new job that is positioned in a Downtown area where apartment buildings are your general way of living. Since my girlfriend and I would both benefit from living within this downtown area because of our jobs, we are now considering making the move. What is really stopping us is our fear that the move will not fair well with Indy, who is 1.5 years old and has a lot of spring to her step.
So please, if anyone who has moved in to an apartment with their boxer(s) could share their experience, as well as tips to accommodating the change that would be much obliged.

Thank you!

I guess you should just ask yourself how will she be impacted while your both at work? If she is already crated in the house and gets her exercise as you say I don't see it making much of a difference to her. If she had full yard access all day while your gone then she would have to adjust. I see no problem at all your already aware of what her needs are and seems you have been handling it.

Thank you for the response.
I should have added that generally with our work schedules she is only ever alone for 3-4 hours at a time, not a full day.
When we do go out, she is always segmented off from parts of the house. Basically she has two rooms and a hallway that she can access, nothing more.

Yes I really don't think it makes a whole lot of difference. Many people who have boxers work and their dogs are crated or confined to a room when they are gone, really no difference if its in a house or apt. I have a house but he truly gets his exercise from walking, and this you do too .
I have a yard and will give him a free run but he is never outdoors without supervision so that can just as easily be done in another area.

Good luck and enjoy your new living quarters.

I loved in an apt with my boxer for about 2 years. She was crated when I was at work. When I got home she would have free reign of the apt. We would take a walk around the complex for about 20 minutes. If it was early enough we would go on an outing to the pet store to visit all her friends. When my daughter lived with me once or twice a week we would go to the dog park. Once every two weeks I would take her to doggy day care for a few hours. Sunday was our starbucks day. My sister and I would walk there, and sit outside enjoying the weather and coffee and Amor would have her "coffee" (ice water) and sit with us. It's manageable. If I had known she was a boxer when she was adopted from the shelter I probably would have chosen a different dog, but I don't take adopting an animal lightly. I had one cat for 8 years, one for 13 and my last for 15. Amor wasn't going anywhere.

We live in a condo - similar to an apt- in central Phoenix. Our 3 yr old boxer is our first and requires A LOT of exercise, however I feel that if we had a house and an appropriate yard, things would be better. We thankfully have a bike path right behind the condo - plex, so we bike and run all the time. Given that, it's still in the city, with only 800 sq ft of space in the condo, if that, and the dogs are crated when we are gone. We walk every morning and night & that is a necessity. If we don't, he puts holes in the walls doing his zoomies and throwing his bones around. Apt living with a boxer is possible, but definitely not recommend. You will just have to know that you will be required to do much more work exercising if you do the apt in the middle of downtown. A smaller breed would be more suitable for apt living.

We have two boxers in our apartment, our girl is not quite 2, and our boy is just over 6...

We have always managed just fine, the dogs have a dog walker that takes them out on adventure hikes in the hills in our area twice per week, plus we walk them first thing in the morning for about 40 minutes before work and then another 45 - hour after work...

They run free on long walks on the weekends and one of us is generally home at lunch every day to let them out and in the case of our girl feed her as she is a bit on the light side...

Despite not having a yard both dogs seem quite happy, I always tell people that as long as they are getting adequate play time and interaction with us - they are like big cats and just want to curl up with you and snuggle...
