Hi there!
I've been told many times that our boxer pup Rocco looks mixed. He has all the traits of a boxer besides the black mask. He's also kind of small, but he was the runt and very little when we got him. He's 7 months old. I'm pretty familiar with most dog breeds but I'm at a loss. Anyone have any ideas as to what he's mixed with?
Uh that's a tough one for me!! "Maybe" there is something slightly off in the shape of the head?? But maybe that's a conformation thing?? I can't really say, in anycase welcome aboard!
Here is what the standard calls for. Note it refers to the black mask as "essential": The American Standard states:-
"The colors are fawn and brindle. Fawn shades vary from light tan to mahogany. The brindle ranges from sparse but clearly defined black stripes on a fawn background, to such a heavy concentration of black striping that the essential fawn background color barely, although clearly, shows through (which may create the appearance of "reverse brindling").
White markings should be of such distribution as to enhance the dog's appearance, but may not exceed one-third of the entire coat. They are not desirable on the flanks or on the back of the torso proper. On the face, white may replace part of the otherwise essential black mask, and may extend in an upward path between the eyes, but it must not be excessive, so as to detract from true Boxer expression.
FAULTS: Unattractive or misplaced white markings. "
Right, but that is just the "standard". Many pure bred boxers don't fit the standard but are still boxers, such as white boxers. Honestly I don't think I've ever seen a fawn boxer without a mask of any kind, but I don't doubt that it could happen, and that dog could still be a purebred boxer even if it doesn't conform to this standard.
I think your pup looks like a boxer, but I agree with Gypsiemouse that perhaps there could be a lab in there somewhere down the line.
Thanks everyone! he's very sweet and I don't mind if he's mixed. Just wondering what everyone's opinions were since I had a hard time determining it! He's definitely got the boxer personality!
Oh by and large only on here will you here folks say...well something is different?? For all practical purposes it's a Boxer! Handsome boy enjoy your dog and welcome aboard!
