Ok guys please be kind...
I posted before about my Mason and his allergies. We saw a dermatologist vet at the beginning of July. And I followed up with my vet who I love and trust.
I have started Mason on Apoquel 16mg for his allergies, I don't like giving him meds and I know a lot of you feel the same way and have voiced your opinion about this when I posted about the vet visit.
I was afraid to start this medicine but I researched it and talk to more then a few vets and vet techs. I spoke with my hubby and just had to go with it, I was nervous and worried sick about starting this medicine.
I have tried all other things, diet, food study, allergy blood test, beneryl, zurtiec and of course steroids, lots of steroids.
The steroids are not good long term and the benedryl just made him sleepy.
He is on a homemade diet with blue buff as his dry food.
Mason is always itchy, grumpy, lazy and not playful. he is my love dog but I could see he was suffering and it broke my heart.
WELL since starting the Apoquel we no longer give benedryl or steroids, he is like a new dog, his hair looks so much better, his ears look great, he is eating like a champ, playing again hope we can lose the extra 5 pounds he is carrying from his thyroid, he runs with Mackie and acts like a dog again, he sleeps so much deeper now, hardly a itch, doesn't shake his head like crazy, his belly and chest are losing the rug burn he gets frm rubbing against the floor.
All in all Apoquel may not have been the best decision for everyone but for me it is. My boy is happy and on his way to good health.
The plan is to keep him on this for 3 months so we can do more intense allergy testing, you have to be free of steroids for 3 months, then maybe we can get some answers and he can get meds esp for his allergy..
Please don't be tough on me, I made a tough decision and pray it continues to work for my boy

Kim, I can't see any of us offer u nothing but support with Mason's itchy condition! U did what was best to offer him a better quality of life. U did ur research, u consulted a vet and are currently monitoring with said vet. That sounds like a wonderful, caring mother. The only thing I'm gonna get on u for is not including a picture of Mason! Now that is unacceptable behavior of a boxer mom, shame on u! ~Misty~

I'm not a fan of Apoquel, but I won't beat you up for it. :) I know you are kind of desperate to give Mason some relief. Hopefully you are just using it short term because long term it's just as harmful if not more harmful than steroids.

On to Blue Buffalo - there have been some recent allegations that their ingredients labels contain products that aren't listed. Of course BB is claiming they had no clue and is blaming their supplier. If it's even a possibility that Mason has a food allergy you might want to switch kibbles.

WTF? Blue Buffalo Caught Lying About Pet Food Ingredients.

I am only keeping him on the meds till we hit 3 months so we can allergy test. not just a bloodtest but actually allergy testing... he doesn't eat a lot of bb... mostly he eats my homemade diet... but now I will be researching bb
