My little miss molly is about 11months old, and we are preparing to move half way across the counrty. she has never been on a long car ride before, but i have heard of some larger dogs getting motion sick in the car. i am concerned that this will happen, and i dont want to add to the stress of a cross country move buy having my baby girl sick the whole way.
so i am wondering what can be done to combat this? I know with my youngest son,w e have to give him motion sick pills before every trip. is there anything like that for dogs? I just want to be prepared, in case.
Does Molly like the car. That would be the first step in preparing for the ride. Get her used to riding in the car and take a practice ride for a longer distance than you normally would. See how she does. If she is anxious that would contribute to nausea.
You can give a dog Dramamine too. I would give your vet a call just to be sure and to see if there is something that works better and longer (like the anti-nausea drug Cerenia).
Here is a link with OTC meds and dosages to help with the Dramamine dosage: OTC Medications
I suffer from motion sickness so I know how miserable it can be. I would suggest a small meal before riding any long distances and frequents stops for some fresh air. Make sure you equip your car with clean up materials like disinfectant, carpet cleaner and papertowels and towels. Cover the area your pup will have access to. (Will she be crated?) If she is not in a crate I would highly recommend some sort of restraint so she is not able to wander around the vehicle and, God forbid, if you should get into an accident not able to leave the car. Do your research for the route you are taking and find a few emergency vets along the way should you need them for anything. Pack bottles of water for her (and you) to drink from. When you can ride with the window open a little.
Hope this helps and good luck with your move - where are you going to be living?
Yes first thing first, does she like car rides? We were lucky enough for Wyatt to love car rides! I recently moved (mid June) 240 miles away. I made one stop but Wyatt didn't want to go out to potty. He did great on the car ride and seeing his new home for the first time!
Where are you moving from and to? Good luck and congrats on the new place!
Molly LOVES the car, but she is so wound up. We are moving from ontario to saskatchewan, so that will be 3 days of driving. She will not be crated. We also have a german shorthaired pointer who travels great. So I am kind of hoping that will help, settle her down a big maybe.
you can give her bendryl, it will make her sleepy and calm her down if hyper but I don't think it will work for sickness. I get carsick and so do 2 out of 4 of my kids, its hard and miserable... good luck
Thanks guys for all the advice. We are now moved into our new place, and Molly did great on the drive. We started off with a motion sickness pill and then did plenty of potty breaks... she did fantastic.
