Well, saw something in Mr. Hank last night had not seen before.

He got very protective.

Had a drunk neighbor climb over the fence around 11 pm to come over and knock on my back patio door - to ask me if I wanted to come over and have a beer at the campfire they were having in their yard.

I was laying on the sofa watching a movie and Mr. Hank was on the sofa next to me. He is not familiar with this neighbor. As soon as he came into the back yard, Mr. Hank started growling a deep low growl and was on alert. When the neighbor banged on the back door, Mr. Hank was up and barking and snarling and ready to get down to business.

Was very impressed and gave Mr. Hank a lot of praise. Nice to see his protective/watch dog attributes are there and kicking in.

And yeah, my neighbor is lucky he did not get shot. :chair::cheers:

That's good! I always said I wanted a dog that would be on alert/ let me know if someone was at the door..

I didn't get that dog! The only way I know someone is coming is when Duke is wiggling profusely at the door.. He doesn't bark at all, he would defiantly let anyone in! My other half thinks if a person gave off the wrong vibe he would act accordingly. Lol I think he'd lick them to death. Really hoping slobbery kisses is a deterrent.lol:doh:

I brought my dog home at 18 mos. and for the first 3 or 4 mos. she did not bark ever. Now (it's been a year) she takes her guarding very seriously. She will bark whenever people, dogs, cats etc... walk by. I am actually working on letting her know when enough is enough!

Same with the doorbell and knocks at first she did not care...then after a few months she started going ballistic with excitement...now she will sit and hold her spot but if she knows the person i let it she gets really excited. If it is a stranger i put her on a leash or in the yard or in her room to be safe.

I guess in our case its a combination of age and getting acclimated

Amor used to really bark at every thing. People pulling in their driveway, walking by, checking their mail, etc. We finally got her to the point that she can do her quiet huffing and puffing without getting scolded. She is allowed to bark when people come to the door or are in our yard etc. The times when is appropriate. Don't want her to think she's not allowed to bark at all because then she might not do "her job" to protect her family. Sometimes if she is in the other room laying down and the chihuahua starts barking, you can hear the thundering foot steps to come back her up.
