While I don't get here nearly as often as I'd like, I just happened to pop on when the thread of mixing sexes vs. same sex was started.
My Zoe is now 2 1/2 and we had been considering adding another - not a puppy but a rescue if we could find the right fit.
An opportunity fell into our laps, as a co-worker of a friend was looking to re-home her boxer. They'd admitted they had bitten off more than they could chew, with three small girls and a feisty boxer, the poor pup was crated for most of the day. She was offering the pup for free, just asking for a loving home. That we could offer without question.
We had 3 meet and greets, all went wonderful! The boxers got a long great, and it was so nice to see Zoe playing (she doesn't get much opportunity as all my friends dogs don't appreciate her play style, I'm not willing to risk anything happening). The pup is 6 months old.
I'm sure you know where this is going.....yep, Ava is a female boxer! I had absolutely no idea that two females in the same home was not a good idea. After reading the thread, it was with a heavy heart that I had to turn down giving Ava a new home. I have two 12 year old's that play a large role in the care of Zoe. They are home with her alone after school for a couple of hours, they are here with her for a couple of hours several weekdays of the summer. I hate the think of anything happening while they are on duty. We have offered to do play dates and to walk Ava as often as we can until they are able to find a home for her. I feel so bad, but on the other hand know for certain that I am not experienced enough to handle it, should it go south when Ava comes of age.
Again, thanks for all the information!
