Hi....We are planning to get Duke neutered next month....and would appreciate insights from experienced members who have already neutered their pups...my points of concern...
1. Will he become dull/inactive after the surgery OR will he be as playful as ever??
2. Is he going be obese post the surgery?
3. How long does it take for him to heal?
4. What measures are to be taken post surgery?
Neutering won't change his behavior / activity level.
Some dogs do gain weight after neuter, but if gets enough exercise and doesn't over eat you shouldn't have any issues with that. - I saw he's a picky eater in your other thread so I doubt he will over eat.
He should be healed within 2 weeks.
After surgery you will want to limit exercise for 7-10 days until the stitches are healed. No running, jumping, stairs, rough-housing with others and don't let him lick the incision area.
We got Uhtred neutered a couple months ago.
It was a big deal in our house. My husband was convinced it would change him, etc.
He's exactly the same sweet happy rambunctious boy he was before. We noticed no change whatsoever. He recovered very quickly (our vet kept him all day afterwards, though) and the only hard part was keeping him from licking the wound.
They say to keep him calm and no activity, but seriously, who can do that?
I kept up his regular walks to get some of his energy out, hoping that would keep him from being too rambunctious. It didn't, but he healed up just fine.
You wil notice that people on here have vastly different opinion about whether you should neuter or not. There's plenty of research on it. In the end, I think it has to come down to what's right for you. It was the right decision for me, for sure.
We had Kai neutered about 6 weeks ago. He came home same day and frankly acted just fine like he had nothing done at all. The following morning he must have been a little sore as he would come up to us and just lie his head in our lap. By day 3 totally back to normal. We were lucky he never even tried to lick the incision, never needed one of those cones around his head. We walked him only for short walks enough to do his business and did not let him off lead where he could run, because he would have. My daughter checked his incision daily to be sure it was healing and not getting infected. It took about 10 days before he looked all healed. About 10 days ago she noticed the incision getting a bit swollen and red looking so she took him back to the vet. the vet thought one of the stitches may have gotten a infection so he put him on antibiotic for a week, all cleared up. His personality so far is the same and I really think it will remain so. It took about 10 days before he looked all healed. I also have a lot of faith in my vet, I feel he is very experienced .
Now why would you want to do that? I'm really not a fan of neutering breeding quality Dogs. Is he a monorchid ? Does he conform to the breeding standard?
But it's "to each his own" I hope he is Pet quality. Now I'll go back to lurking.
1. After a couple of days, saw no change at all in energy levels and playfulness. I actually was hoping it would have calmed him down. Not. He was still crazy!
2. No. As long as you feed them right and exercise them right. Hank is still pure muscle, and has grown accordingly and quite well.
3. A day or so for the initial effects to wear off. A full week or so to fully heal up. No big deal.
4. I put the "cone of shame" on him for the first 2 days. Then the hard part was keeping him less active for the rest of the week. After that he was good to go.
Took about 3 months for his "Nut Sack" to full retract. Now just a very little bit of skin hanging there, hard to tell. Good to go.
Had Hank done at 8.5 months. He is one year old now.
That's good to know....thank you...Hank is really handsome...Duke is 1yr 3months....i was told to wait till he matures...right now he's being treated for a skin condition...we'll get him neutered next month...
