Well, finally had to break down and get a Pet Safe wireless system for Mr. Hank.
My brother has used one for several years with great success on his short haired pointer - and that dog goes crazy if he sees a chipmunk or squirrel.
Mr. Hank was starting to roam off to far away from the yard. That had to stop. Building a fence, well that was way out of the budget due to the size of my yard.
So got the 1/2 acre Pet safe wireless, for $250 at Rural King.
Ok, so took him out the first day and did the beep, beep, beep training, and put up some flags. But, I messed up. I tried to do it too fast. So did just the beeps and the flags for about an hour. Then me being the impatient person that I am said, "Well, lets crank this device up and see what it does". So put it on level 5 (goes from level 1-6) and took Mr. Hank out and walked him to the border. Well, he got shocked, and jumped about 6 feet into the air. :cry2:
I felt pretty bad about that. :cry_baby: Did not realize it would zap him that much. Poor doggy. Of course he wanted to run inside. Now I had a problem. For the next day or two, he did not even want to go out of the house. And he would not go on a leash with me for very far. I scared him pretty bad. No need to flame me, I actually felt pretty bad about it. So took a few more days of training, regaining his trust and doing the training again.
But now has been two weeks and all is well. Have the collar on level 2 and works well. He knows the boundaries and stays in the yard. He knows when the red collar goes on, he stays within the yard. the red collar is off, and/or he is on a leash, he goes outside the boundaries with no hesitation. Smart dog. So has been a success.
Glad it is working, cause looks like I am going to be leaving in about 2 months, and will be giving him to my parents to watch over for several months - as a new job will consist of a 60 days on, 60 days off rotation overseas.
