I am asking if boxers get tired easily as the fairly new owner of a two year old female boxer rescue. I am mindful of the heat down here in the Keys and always have water on hand for her on our walks but I have noticed that even though she is all in and ready to keep going that she gets tired much faster than other dogs I have known. I had her at the vet for a routine check up, she is 64 lbs and they said she was healthy.
Our walk schedule is a brisk 30 to 45 minute early walk before work, a quick potty walk at lunch and then another normal paced 30 to 45 minute walk after work. We have had the same schedule for two months but her stamina doesn't seem to be getting any better.
She acts completely healthy and happy, just not used to a dog getting tired way before I do.
Duke has short bursts of energy and then sleeps for a few hours. However many Boxers can go and go and go for hours.
In the heat (and cold), they do tire faster because their muzzles are so short. The shortness of the muzzle doesn't allow the air to cool or warm up before it enters the lungs. As a result, they will overheat much faster.
Yes, I was reading about that this morning. Maybe she isn't so much tired but overheating? I am careful to walk her in the morning when it's still dark and the coolest part of the day, same thing after work but I am wondering if she is overheating? I haven't noticed any signs of distress, just the panting but am observant of the temperature when we do walk. I think I might need to shorten the walks, especially the one after work when it is warmer.
I live in Georgia, and I have to shorten walks during the hot, humid summer months, even in early morning. Jackson can normally walk 3 miles during mild weather, but can't do more than about a mile and a half during the summer, without acting overheated.
Take water with you for the dog and allow for breaks during walks.
I am definitely going to shorten the walks. I'm sure that's what it was, a tad too much and she was getting hot. I appreciate the help. Thank you guys.
She may be overheating and she may be a laid bad boxer. Or a combination of the two. When you get back home does she sleep or does she perk up and want to play inside?
I think I read about the shape of their tongue while panting. The edge of the tongue gets into a little v shape when they are getting too overheated. If it is still more flat they are still ok. Is this true?
She is pretty laid back, I am still shocked at what a great dog she is for a two year old rescue. When we get back from the walks, she lays on a cool spot on the tile floor and definitely is tired. I have watched her closely the last few days, I think its a combo of her just being pretty low key and the heat.
I have shortened the walks and she still sleeps a lot but definitely seems to enjoy the shorter walks. I couldn't ask for a better dog. She is awesome!
Thank you all for these answers. I came to this forum because I had the same question and knowing boxers are suspectable to cancer I was getting worried but knew it was possibly the heat and humidity. I have found a new community of boxer lovers ❤
