My 5 yr old male Boxer Boomer collapsed on me 10 days ago while playing with our pup Raven. He was out for about 2 mins. He regained conscious, was up and walking like nothing happened. His gums were white and I wasn't taking any chances so off to the vet we went.

My vet took an X-ray and did a ekg. X-ray showed his heart was not enlarged. His heart rate was 200 at the time. My vet contacted the nearest cardiologist which is 2 hrs away. He was put on Sotalol to regulate his heart rate, was sent home to follow up with the cardio today. She did a ecg and said he has Cardiomyopathy. I am devastated.

This is deja vu for me. 5 yrs ago I lost my 6 yr old male brindle to lung cancer and shortly after that, my 10 yr old fawn female was put down due to DM. Now Boomer has BCM and I have a 10 yr old female approaching the avg Boxer's life span. I don't think I can go through that pain again.

Boomer is on a 24 Holter monitor, which surprisingly he is tolerating well. I guess I'll know in a few days how bad his arrhythmia is. Until then I'll pray l don't lose him to sudden cardiac death.

I lost my girl to DM at Ten also! The Cardiomyopathy, just sucks! You just never know and have very little warning!

As I would "assume" rehomeing is not really a viable option, you are already doing the best you can, take care of him.

Other than that you'll just have to try and be more like your Boxer! Every day is a great day and live life to it's fullest! The health thing is the down side of life with Boxers. I like to believe the joy they bring is worth the pain they cost when they leave us??

Yes it will be hard when they cross over but fortunately that day is not here now! Long way of saying be like your Boxer and enjoy the time you have together and hopefully it will include many years to come! :)

I'm sorry your going through this to. I think the unknown is the hard part. It's like living with a ticking time bomb. How old was Rocco when he was diagnosed? What is your protocol in treating him?

Boomer will be allowed to live his life to the fullest, I'm not going to change that. I will treasure every day that I have with him. Hopefully it will be many.

Thanks everyone for your thoughts and prayers.

Hmm typed a reply but its not here. Just wanted today I am so sorry you and Boomer are going thru this. On the plus side you caught it and he can be on medication and monitored, I'm sure it feels devastating . We never know what tomorrow brings for us but we can live each day to the fullest. It sounds to me you have control of this and Boomer will have many years to come. I will keep your gang in my thoughts.
