What to do?

We lost our 10 yr old female to cancer last week. We have a 5 yr old male who was recently diagnosed with BCM. We also have a 7 month old female.

Since Maci's passing Boomer wants nothing to do with the pup. I know he is grieving and hopefully that will change. We got Raven the pup for Boomer as a playmate because Maci was no longer interested in playing. Boomer and Raven have bonded well, but not like Boomer's bond with Maci. Since Boomer's diagnosis of BCM he really hasn't been interested in playing much. He actually gets annoyed at Raven. Now I have a pup with a ton of energy and no one to play with.

Enter Dexx. He is a 2 yr old fawn in foster locally with Carolina Boxer Rescue. Was on his last day in a kill shelter when CBR rescued him. I know nothing about him except he hates cats and gets along well with other dogs.

Raven is not fully trained and in a crazy stage right now. Boomer has his own issues. However, I would like Raven to have a playmate closer to her age. Am I crazy to even consider adding more stress to the mix?

Dexx sure is a handsome boy!

I'm a rescuer and I don't believe I'm saying this, but I've been in this exact situation myself when we first started out with boxers. If you are FULLY committed to putting in the work and aren't the type to bail if things get a little crazy, I'd say go for it.

Our first two boxers were Lillie and Jake. Jake passed away on Halloween and Lillie would sit and literally cry for him, so we brought home another male, Max, just two weeks later. They got along okay, but they never bonded to the point that they would interact. Lillie was still not herself, so we brought home a one-year-old male in February. Best. Decision. EVER. He was what we needed to bridge the gap. He would play with Lillie and when she was tired, he would play with Max. Right up to when Lillie passed away, she and Max still didn't interact much, but Tucker had enough energy to keep them both busy.

Just be sure and keep up your training with the puppy. Start a training class if you haven't already. Be sure and make individual/separate training time for both her and the new guy.

Just don't do what we did. We got involved in rescue and kept going. Now we have a whole herd and it's total chaos. LOL
