Is it too soon?

Just got back from the vet today to get the second round of shots (he's 12weeks) and made an appointment to go back when he's 17 weeks (close to 18) for his final round. The question I have is the vet wants to start him on 50% adult food 50% puppy food at 18 weeks, I think that's really soon. I always thought you gave them puppy food until a year. She also wants to start him on Trifexus on the first (a few days before 15 weeks). I know you should always listen to the vet but I want to triple check.

Seems very early to add adult food, an option would be a quality all stages food.

If you live in a high mosquito area, I feel like you should do heartworm protection, our vet had our older pup on Tri-Fexis (found out later a number of cons on it). He hated taking it. We switched to Heart Guard and both pups love taking it. On Heart Guard you need a separate flea and tick med during the season. Do some on-line searches and make your decision. I'm sure others will add their opinions on the subject.

I've heard and read quite a few negative things on trifexis. I won't give it to my dog. My dog gets trI heart plus which is equivalent to heart guard and a topical flea and tick. I tried sentinel but my dog didn't like it and it would cause her to lose her appetite and give her upset tummy for a few days. All dogs are different though. My dad dog does fine on sentinel. In 3 years I've only seen two fleas and two ticks which are easy to spot on my dog since she is almost all white.

Our vet and also our trainer suggested we go off puppy food at 5 months. They both felt he would grow too fast and they wanted the joints to catch up with the bone length. So we did switch to a good quality grain free food (Victor select high energy). He also was put on heart worm prevention early on as the mosquitos in our area are bad (Louisiana). We use heart guard plus, which all my dogs have been on and they like it as their treat without any side effects. For fleas and ticks we use next guard, also a chewable. So far no problems. I like the ease of use no oily junk on the dog, no fleas or ticks. The next guard is pricey though but worth it to me. I think vets push what salesmen push on them, you can talk to your vet about what you prefer like heart guard plus and I'm sure they will have no problem in providing this.
