Hi guys! Opie turned 6 months old last week! We just had him weighed three days ago and he was 53.4lbs. We are currently feeding him blue buffalo life source protection chicken and brown rice (puppy formula) @ 2 Cups twice daily. My vet tells us that he is healthy as a horse and I tend to agree but just wanted some help from the experts:). Does 2 Cups twice a day sound adequate for a boxer pup of opies age and weight? Also at 53.4 lbs how much excersize should he be getting a day? A side from his normal potty trips outside my fiance and I take opie outside for 30 minutes each evening after dinner to run in the backyard or for a hike through the local park. Thanks for the help! Here's a few recent photos.

What is the recommended feeding on the bag? I feed Rocco (6 years old) about 4 cups per day and he maintains his weight perfectly. He is on a low-fat diet for pancreatitis so he needs more food to feel satisfied.

The walks sound good but Boxer pups need time to "burn" off their energy during the day as well.

He looks good. I feed a different food but our boy gets about the same amount. Sounds like exercise is good too. When you say run I guess you mean off lead, thats what we let our boy do to burn some energy without over exerting his joints. He is a very handsome pup!

Both my pups are fed 1 1/2 cups of TOTW twice a day. You tend to feed less with grain free foods. One weighs 53 pounds at almost 2 years old and is in constant motion, the other is a more sedate 83 pound 5 1/2 year old. If I feed my bigger pup any more he gains weight which at his age isn't good for him. The recommendations on the bag are just that recommendations, if he finishes quickly and still seems hungry you can add more. Make sure his droppings don't soften up, that's a sign of overeating. Good luck!

Thanks for all the helpful replies everyone! The feeding chart on the bag recommends between 2- 3/4 to 3- 3/4 cups per day at his age and weight which is a significant difference from what they recommended just one month ago when he was in the 3-5 month range which was 4-6 cups per day. I suppose in the coming months I should consider cutting him back about a 1/4 cup at each meal? When I say I take him out to run I do mean off lead. Our back yard is right around 1 acre so we play fetch and just let him "do laps" which he seems to love. We also like to use that time to work on his commands like "come" and "stay". We began teaching him his boundaries and how to obey us off lead almost as soon as we brought him home at 8 weeks and it's worked wonders. He is by far the most well trained dog on or off lead that I've ever owned and he's still so young! Our next goal is to teach him not to jump on people when they come in the home or the yard, however he is having a bit of trouble with that one as he is one giant ball of loveable energy!

Remember it's a suggestion, I think the assumption by dog food companies is that most pups finish their growing cycle near a year old and don't need as much food (or they get chubby) boxers continue to grow, so as long as your pup is growing and still looking good feed him what he needs. As he slows down his growth cut back his food a bit to maintain a good weight.
