Hello- My neutered male boxer who is 4 mo shy of 4 yrs of age has just started to mark. I'm not sure that it's a big deal because he isn't marking in the house, but I was wondering if this common? He has no urinary issues (checked by vet) & was neutered at 8 mo of age. He has rarely lifted his leg, but all of a sudden within the last couple wks will lift & mark our 11 yr old spayed females urine spot in the yard. He also will start lifting & marking on our walks - just all of a sudden- without smelling a certain spot. I walk fast & I use a gentle leader so I don't give the dogs an opportunity to sniff & mark. He will just do it. Could there be a female in heat in the area? Why would he start doing this all of a sudden now? We don't go to dog parks & never have our 2 dogs co-mingled with others. We just got back from vacation with the inlaws a couple wks ago but there was nothing out of the ordinary there. The dogs were with us the entire time. Just curious, thank you.

My 4+ y.o. male (K.O.) does this every time we go out for a potty break. He's been a leg lifter since 9 months old. Once in a while, he lowers himself and pees, sometimes he hits one of his front legs with the urine stream and realizes he screwed up and looks at me. I smile and murmur, Knucklehead

Every once in a blue Moon, he gets confused between lifting and squatting and does a hybrid maneuver... Pretty hilarious! And earlier this year, I noticed he has been searching out our female Boxer's (Kina) pee & poop spots and he's been marking those every day, multiple times. He's a bona fide compulsive marker.

okay.... here's a new one. Keep in mind, we had an snow/ice event and then snow on top. So, we have a hard crust, with about and inch of snow on top of the ice crust.

I just had Kina out and she did both natural duties. Brought her back and took K.O. out. He found Kina's pee spot and did the usual lift the leg and peed over top of it to cover it. THEN!!!! he took his nose and very gently, started pushing snow over to cover the pee spot, from all different angles. Took him about 2 minutes to complete the task. I just stood there and watched in amazement and chuckled. He was so careful and gentle about it. So, he covers her urine scent with his ....and then he covers the whole thing with snow.

Wow!
