I'm new to the forum and new to owning a boxer. My big boy Roscoe is 10 months old and already weighs 69 pounds! He's not tall and lean, rather shorter and stocky I think (?) for a boxer. It's cold outside and he could probably stand some more exercise, but is this overweight?? He's never looked lean not once since 8weeks old!
Can you post a picture of him from above? He looks good, but should have a "waistline" rather than being straight like a sausage. What are you feeding and how much? My big guy weighed that but he's really tall. PS he's a nice looking pup!!
Thanks joannb! Sausage-like is a good description! Today while we were out walking, he looked really good, but here is a pic from directly above. I feed Diamond Naturals Puppy, 4 cups a day (split between breakfast and supper). He's done really good with the the brand. No tummy troubles & it's what I've fed him most his life. The majority of his exercise is from playing with our older dog, but maybe he needs a more 'structured' playtime to assure he is getting enough exercise?
What does the back of the food bag recommend for his age and weight? I think at 10 months you probably don't want him to lose weight but slow down a bit. It might be best to feed at the lower range of the scale for his age/weight. You may always have to watch what he eats to avoid being really overweight.
My older pup Max topped out at 92, he had a muffin top when sitting from behind and was a sausage, which was way too much. He always gained 3 - 4 pounds as a puppy. He's been on diets several times. Anytime the vet says he's looking good so I give him a bit more food he gains again, I've got him at 82 pounds now and he's got a waist and looks good. He's 5 1/2 now and mostly of the time he's pretty a couch potatoe type. Although he can lay on the speed when he's guarding the back yard or wrestling with Zoe (he gives up way before she's ready to quit!)
My little girl Zoe is a much smaller way more active pup. She's almost 2 and weighs in at 53 pounds. She's energy in motion and hasn't gained a pound since she was just over a year old. Surprisingly, they are both fed the exact same amount of food and maintain different weights.
