Iota Pet Tracker Review

So, we wanted a pet tracking device that would let us locate our boy if he ever got away from us and got lost. There are lots of devices on the market, but they are expensive and they are subscription services, which means a monthly fee. We wanted something that would allow us to track our dog without an expensive monthly fee.

I found this: iota GPS Tracker | Pet Tracker | Iota Tracking device a long time ago, but it was a kickstarter campaign and still in development. We got on the waiting list and finally got ours yesterday!

I thought I'd post my initial thoughts in case others are interested.

For $158 you get a home base and a locator (iota). The locator attaches easily to the collar and is fairly low profile. I'll attach a picture. The home base casts a radius of 2-4 miles, but also piggybacks off of other home bases. So in a city where 5-10 other people also have the device, you've got a huge area covered. The website has a map of current coverage, which isn't exact.

You use the device via a phone app. (I'll see if I can attach a picture of that as well). From your phone you can set up a geofence so that you'll receive an alert if the geofence boundary is broken. You can also track the device, trigger a locator beeper, and (this is in development) check the temperature (the device has a thermometer in it).

So far I'm happy. A couple things:
1. the geo fence isn't very small. You can't make it as small as your yard (well, not my yard). The smallest it goes is about a 3 house radius.
2. Indoors you will sometimes get "unable to locate" alerts.
3. you can't zoom in super far. I envisioned being able to see what part of the yard he was in. You can't do that. You can just see where he is. But it's more than precise enough for finding in emergencies.

Customer service is amazing. I get emails right back -- within an hour -- when I have questions.

Just saw your email. Thanks for the review! I haven't purchased anything yet but the guy that was organizing the group went with this one too! :) I saw on FB that it's worked for him on one occasion already. He has an electric fence for the dog, but once in a while she manages to get away.

Thank YOU for telling us about the device! It really is very helpful. After a couple months, still no complaints. I like getting the notification on the phone, and you do get them: it notifies me every time the dog walker takes him for a walk!
