Should you go out with your dog to a restaurant

Recently followed an interesting conversation about whether or not one should take their dog to a restaurant with you and what sort of preparation you should do in advance. Any thoughts on this?

Most restaurants here do not allow dogs inside unless it is a service dog. Some of the cafe's though that have outside seating allow them there. I think that is fine. To me a whole lot of people are irresponsible with their dogs, I see it just in general at places like petsmart, dog parks (though I don't go) and generally just taking a walk. They can't control them, think their dog is so precious and that I should too and put it in my space. No thanks.

Thank you for all the feedback. I have seen some irresponsibility in the part of pet owners that i would not want to see with my dog. I admire people with well trained dogs that one can comfortable tag along into a restaurant that allows them. I will definitely take training seriously.

We have taken our boxer to a pub/restaurant before. It works ok as long as we have remembered to bring a chew or something. We put her under the table and tie the lead to the table and she knows she just has to lay down. We often stop for lunch at places or a coffee with her. We have done this since she was young.
