Loud breathing, is this normal??

I wasn't sure if this was a normal boxer thing, Tyson breathes pretty loud through his nose. I mentioned it to the vet along with his runny nose at his last appt and he gave me some antibiotics to give to him just in case and they didn't seem to help. It's mainly when he's excited or breathing heavily but it's something that our Border collie doesn't do which made me thing it's just a boxer thing. The vet did mention that sometimes with dogs that have shorter muzzles can have small passages in their nostrils that can be fixed with surgery. I want to see if anyone elses boxer is like this before I go and get some kind of surgery that I don't need...

My female breathes heavy only because she is always running everywhere. *Is the breathing affecting him or is it just lound and annoying? *Is it after he gets done playing or all day?

I wouldn't doing surgey with my female because I know about some of the breathing issues that come along just because of the breed and the short muzzle.

Voltaire has the shortest nose in this forum and he breaths pretty heavily. He also snores enough to make the walls tremble *Nothing to worry about in his case. Don't think about an op unless it seriously bothers him. I just tend to avoid long walks in hot weather because he doesn't cope well at all.

Henry seems to breathe loud when he's resting or sleeping, of coarse there's the snoring too. :wink:

Unless it seems like he can't breathe good enough, then I wouldn't worry about it.

Because of the shorter nose Boxers do tend to breathe a bit more loudly..I remember the first time my sister visited she commented on that with my 2...I guess I am soo used to hearing it, I don't think twice about it and like Annette says, it does also make them snore too....

It's mainly when he's breathing heavy like during play or when he gets excited or takes in a deep breath, sometimes when he's sleeping but not very often. He snores too but thats just every once in a while, but when he does, man he really does!!!

When Jetta gets excited...she breathes VERY heavy, much more so than Bo...it also takes her a little longer to calm down...she also is the household snorer...

Oggie actually has very loud breathing when he's going in/coming out of sleep. *Of course this leads to snoring as well. *Definitely normal for a short muzzled dog.

Sounds pretty normal. *Mine breath heavy sometimes and they both snore.

This is a great post! Newt snores and I think she is the cause of Global warming as well..lol... Newts nose runs sometimes and is dry at other times, she has allergies just like us humans, I used to watch her at night and I would worry if she was breathing too hard and not enough, to this day nothing has been wrong with her lungs or her nose, its just the way they are built, dont always let them tell you to use antibiotics unless they know for a fact your baby is sick and rethink surgery unless you have had the oxygen level in blood checked, Im sure its nothing to worry about, you'll know when your baby is sick when they lay there with no energy, Newt tells me when she doesnt feel good, she just sits and stares at me until I check her from head to toe and sure enough if somethings wrong I know it right away! I often wonder if the fellow who invented breathe rite strips could do it for our boxer babies as well.. lol...No worries unless you see the nose drain with mucus, even then it could just be allergies... been there done that too and usually it passes with plenty of water
