Default OK!! Weird ? about whiskers!!

Every now and then I go to give them a kiss...I pull back a bloody cheek that feels like someone just stuck a needle in me!! Its hurts like hell!!! So last week I got Stella and started rubbing her muzzle and it felt like a pin cushion! Some of her whiskers were alot shorter than the others and were REALLY stiff & hard....I pulled on it and it came right out...she didn't even flinch!! Actually she got all Boxer on me!! So...last night same thing happened with Max....I got a bloody cheek and did the same check with him...sure enough...short, stiff whiskers...he wasn't quite as amused as Stella with me "pulling" it out !!! What causes this? They do chew everything and anything in the yard...does that have something to do with it? I can't remember this ever happening with any of my other dogs!

That's odd, SuzyQ has some short little whiskers but they aren't any different from the long ones.

Stella had 3 of them like that and Max had one. Could it be from "face fighting"? I still have a hole in my cheek!!

Our Jax (RIP) used to have that happen. We did find a few that were really hard and sharp as pins when we would rub his muzzle, etc. At first we thought he got stuck with a porcupine quill at camp (porkies roam around there and while the dogs have never encountered one, the porkies leave their quills near the deer salt lick). Anyways, it wasn't a quill, it was just a really, really hard whisker. We probably pulled 5 or 6 out over the course of his life. I haven't encountered this yet with my other two though. Not sure how it happens.
