Default Chewing on his Paws

Deuce has been chewing on his paws lately. Probably for about 2-3 weeks. He is almost 2 years old and this is a new behavior for him. Has anyone else had this happen to them before and what would be causing him to do this. He is chewing on them like his feet has fleas but that is the only place he chews at. Plus I put meds on him to prevent fleas. I inspect his feet and it doesn't look like there is anything on them to be causing them to itch. Is this something I should be concerned about. Plus the noise that he makes when he is chewing on them is just really annoying.

Did you just recently start a new prevention for fleas? How about any changes with food/treats? Or really any other changed around the house, new cleaner for the floor, new grass chemicals? Is he chewing them til they are sore, and nasty?

Hope you get to bottom of the chewing! Poor guy!

My Vet told me that this is a sign of allergies. She told me to give Benadryl. Don't give to your dog without asking vet first. It helps sometimes. Sometimes I think the foot chewing becomes a habit like humans biting their nails. I know it is frustrating.

thanks for the replies. I haven't changed any treatments for him. I have used the same heartworm meds for over a year. I use Hartz flea meds. I have changed detergent but I have only washed 1-2 loads with it and nothing that he would have come in contact with. Plus the chewing started before I bought this box of detergent. I don't use any kind of lawn treatment because we rent our house and I don't care that much about the yard so I doubt that would be it. He isn't chewing them til they bleed yet and I haven't noticed any swelling. It does sound like he has some new allergy. I will call my vet and ask him about it

Paris used to chew her paws as well but I changed her food to an approved brand Canadae and that cleared up the problem. She used to chew them until they bled. It was aweful.

I def.would not use hartz flea treatment, its garbage...

There is a lot of information on flea meds here.... natural, topical..etc...

Hopefully you can figure out whats causing this... If you do a search on allergies and or chewing , you will get lots of information on this, and what members here have gone through

Dogs can and do start chewing sometimes for no reason and then, yes it can become an obsession..No redness, or swollen areas in between the pads? It does sound like allergies or possibly a yeast infection..For allergies, liquid Benadryl works great, get the generic kind, about 4-6 tsp every 6 hrs..For the yeast infection, have to check on that one, seems I remember a member suggesting something for that as well

Duke had allergy/yeast problems that resulted in foot chewing. We had to change his diet, soak his feet in vinegar, put him on vitamins, benadryl.

When all that cleared up he started chewing out of anxiety.

He stopped just as fast as he started. Talk to your vet - and get him off Hartz if you can.

Zulu was chewing his once and it ended up being a bit of yeast.

My little Malti poo Stumpie chews his terribly in the summer, the vet said that it was a summer allergy to grass
