Default How Much To Feed Your Boxer?

This has been a long standing question of mine and I hope you guys can bring some insight to this.

Early this year the Vet said Brix lost weight. He was 1 yr old when I got him and weighed 52 lbs. The Vet said he weighed 55 lbs the last time they saw him. She said most likely I was feeding him cheap food and told me to put him on T&D because of his plaque issue. I was instructed to feed him 4-4 1/4 cups.

I checked the ingredient list and it looked bad. After a month, he continued losing weight. The receptionist then said I could probably feed him 5 cups. That's when he started to get bloody diarrhea. It was just a bad experience. The Vet hinted at EPI and we did a lot of tests.

I stopped seeing that Vet and switched him back to Wellness, 4 cups a day. He's now 58 lbs and almost 2 years old.
Each cup is 430 kcals and in total he is receiving 1720 kcal per day. He is moderately active. Am I feeding him enough?

Can you post a picture of him or maybe give a height to give an idea on his appearance. All dogs, even of the same breed are build differently. I have a 95 lb doberman who appears smaller than other dobermans that weigh less because he is all bone and muscle. Does your vet say he is unhealthy underweight? You should be able to see/feel the ribs but they should not be prominent. Most of the time the recommendation on the bag is to overfeed and I've never used the amount listed on the bag aside from starting off a puppy as a starting point. 4 cups a day sounds like a lot but I'm not familiar with the food. Get him on a good food, not recommended by the vet necessarily and start with the recommended allowance and go from there, cut back, add too (doubtful). You can also add healthy treats but no junk to fatten him up.

I feed Elyse 3 cups a day and she is looking fine and the vet told me she looks well..I also give her PB sandwiches for snacks at times as well as apples..I also freeze motts applesauce cups and she loves those when it's warm out..your boxers weight sounds good to me..they are all different in their size and shapes..hope you find a good balance for him..

Ok, this picture was back in May (3 months ago). He is probably 55-56 lbs here. I can feel his ribs but they are not prominent. They were showing in the beginning of the year when he dropped to about 51 lbs. His height is about 22-23 inches. I will see if I have more recent pic tonight.

With the Wellness I followed the package label and was feeding 3 cups. I noticed him getting thin so I brought it to 4 cups. That's when the Vet said to switch and the problems happened. The vet thought 4 was a lot. He Vet also mentioned his ideal weight is 60lbs but I'm not sure how they calculated that.

Brix is a small male boxer. Even though I adopted him at 1 yr, I knew him as a puppy, and we all said he would be small. His Dad was a lean boxer but his Mom had a wide chest and bulkier.

I think he looks pretty good..if you are not seeing spine or hip bones, I would keep doing what you are doing...I would rather see them a bit on the thin side actually, in the long run, easier on the joints, especially as they age...Wellness is a very good food, 4 cups should be enuf for him unless he is getting an extreme amount of activity

Thanks for the input. 4 cups seem to be the magic number so I will stick to that. Wellness is working well with him also.

He looks great to me!! Bruiser used to get about 4 cups a day and was nice and thin and fit(back when he wasn't neutered and VERY active) but he is now neutered and 6 years old and getting a bit chunky so he is on a diet! He gets like 2 cups with green beans lol Still pretty chucky but I think he is looking better. lol5

I think he looks great to me too, but when I see other boxers, they make him look so small. He's not as wide as the other boxers or as chunky. He's really a lean mean kinda guy.
