Jessie's Eye

My sister and her family has a boxer "Jessie" is her name. She was about 6 months old when they got her. Jessie is a beautiful brindle. They got her from a man who had many pitbulls and rottweilers and he told my sister the other dogs were extreamly mean to her. So he put her outside and said "seniority rules, she had to go out". She was VERY thin, you could see her ribs and hip bones and was VERY scared of everyone and everything (even her own shadow). She also didn't like any attention, she would curl up in the corner of a room and shake for HOURS. I knew from owning boxers this was not normal behavior. So of course my first thought was something bad happened to her. She also had "something" pink in her right eye. They took her home. (In my opinion saving her life)

Jessie will be 1 in December, and has gained weight and FINALLY starting to come around with meeting people. She growls and barks at EVERYONE and then runs and hides. She is still skidish around people she doesn't see everyday (including my husband and myself who see's her almost every weekend.) Im thinking this will just take time for her to become "normal" and playful. It breaks my heart to see how she acts b/c that is NOT what I would consider normal behavior.

What Im courious about is the "something" pink in her right eye has never gone away. I have read about them having 3 eyelids and not sure if this is something we should be worried about? The VET didn't say anything about it, so Im not sure if Im over reacting. It doesn't seem to bother her, but I just want to make sure she is OK. Does anyone know what this may be? Should we take her to another VET and ask what they think? I told my sister I would ask around here before making an appt. Any help would be much appreciated.

So glad she is doing well and what a rough start she had. Keep up the work with her she will be great. I don't have experience with her eye but they have something called cherry eye it could be that. I would go to a different vet but that's me

Awww... poor Jessie! It sounds like she may have been abused Poor thing!!
As for her eye, could it be a mild case of cherry eye?

As for the eye... its called a haw (or third eyelid). She has one light haw and one dark haw; which I think is what is throwing you off.

From the pictures that you've posted it looks perfectly normal in size and shape... take a look at this website, it explains it quite well.

I agree with the above.

Whenever they get stressed, hot, or irritated the haw gets red or pink. It also happens if a collar is too tight.

Both of Laney's eyes are droopy and red....I asked my vet about it when she was a pup. He told me not to worry, a common enuf trait in boxers. But, with the droopy eyes, I must watch out for eye infections.

Lolly has the exact same thing. Her third eyelid on the right side is very light coloured causing basically an optical illusion that her eye is bulging even though it's not. When she gets playing or stressed it goes quite red. Glad to hear that she is in a much better place now

So glad Jessie has been rescued by your sister and her family - such a horrible start to her life. she will need time and love ... the above posts for her eye would be my advice ... welcome to the forum
