I am going to say that in my opinion it does benefit the dogs to a degree. If you get a dog with correctly laying natural ears, the risk of ear infections just went up a ton. The first year of Duke's life was full of ear infections that were painful for him. If I had cropped him, that could've been diminished. Even now they get itchy every so often and he scratches them until they're bleeding and he's whining. And puppies are over dramatic sometimes. They may whine and squeal when something is only hurting a little. Or they're recovering from anesthesia and the stress of a vet office. And then they're fine the next day back to their happy little selves. Quite honestly, I love the look of a nice crop and my next pup will be cropped. I think you need to find an experienced vet to keep pain risks low. Sent from my iPhone using Petguide.com Free App |

I'm not really against cropping the ears. I would never do it unless I had intentions of showing the dog but I don't think there's anything wrong with people who do. I am definitely all for docking the tail in most cases. I've seen the HORRIBLE damage that can be done to a dogs tail who has a hard tail like boxers and Spaniels and Sheepdogs. There is a reason they are cropped. I'd rather hav eit done when they're a little pup and it's less painful than later down the road when it's broken down to the bone. At the kennel I used to work at we had a boarding Boxer who had a tail and at 4 years old they had to have it amputated because he cracked it all the way down to the bone. That is way more painful than doing it as a pup.

OUCH Jessica!! I just hurt reading about that poor fur baby who cracked his tail. I couldn't imagine the pain for that dog. I agree, I love having the tails docked & I love having the ears natural. My aunt was giving me a line (as she has a boxer that she shows) telling me how boxers are meant to have cropped ears & how if we don't crop them they are more prone to ear infections. Well my theory is, if their ears are to have that cropped ear look, that is how they'd be born. Not to mention we had a boxer/GSD mix and her ears stood up. She got ear infections a lot so it doesn't matter how the ears are. Of course, this is my opinion.

I'm a fan of docked and floppy....I sometimes wish Mooshie didn't have a long tail, because it's evil!! My husband joked the other day that he was going to go and get a cup, since Mooshie is just at the right height to smack him in his "gentleman's region", lol!
I also spend a lot of time checking Mooshie for "happy tail", because I know that since he smacks it into everything, he is a prime candidate for it. And when/if it happens, I will have it amputated. And won't miss it a bit (yeah, I know, I'm a mean mommy).

I wouldn't call you mean. Our Maggie was a boxer/GSD mix who had a tail. She used to smack it off the wall/cabinets & it sounded like a drum. It would hurt when she'd hit you too. I always said when we get our next dog, it will have a docked tail. I don't miss the tail beatings at all.
