I love white boxers. I would love to rescue one someday when I have a bigger house or something. I think they are gorgeous. Sent from my iPhone using Petguide.com Free App

Gypsiemouse hit the nail on the head. My husband and I didn't pick our puppy out, we let him pick us. We got him at 8 weeks old and after a few weeks realized he was probably deaf, because he wasn't leading his name.
Approximately 25% of boxers born are "ultra flashy" and 18% of the white boxers are deaf (either unilateral or bilateral). Researchers believe that the genetic marker that makes them ultra flashy cuts off the blood supply to the cochlea causing tissue death and deafness. My boxer has been easy to train using ASL hand signals. They say that dogs pick up on hand signals easier than verbal cues. If you end up with a deaf white boxer there are good trainers that can help you adjust to life with a deaf dog. I have to say it has it's pros for sure; he doesn't pay any attention to dogs barking at him and he doesn't start barking at anything that makes a noise. The cons are that you can't let them off their leash and my puppy got bit because he was being too rough with my cousin's dog and couldn't hear her growling. I got my dog a shock collar that has a vibrate setting, so when I take him to the dog park I can vibrate his collar and he knows to come back to me or look at my for a hand signal (i.e.the "leave it" hand gesture). I would never trade my puppy for the world. I think the biggest word of advice is to let your puppy pick you, don't pick a dog based on looks. We took a toy and blanket in with us to get his litter mates' scents on them and Zeus came up, took the toy, went off with it to play and we knew that was the puppy for us!! Good luck!!!

I wasnt looking for a white Boxer when I got Kippah although Ive always liked white dogs in general. Kippah was in need of rescue(in a kill shelter) so that tipped the scales for me. She has no deafness except selective hearing a lot of the time

I agree about letting the dog pick you... My fiance and I had pretty much already decided/agreed that we were going to get the white boy but we wanted to meet all of them... It just so happened that the white boy was the one we fell in love with. He was the sweetest and cuddliest of all the puppies. He curled right in my neck and gave kisses and then passed out and I was sold

When I got Nikki I had actually picked another pup through a picture but when I saw her I just fell in love and asked if I could have her instead. She was the first one that came up to me and she was only 5 pounds!! She apparently shared a sac with another boxer. Yes I paid full price for her regardless of any health concerns she may of had. Everyone thought I was crazy but I just loved her.

Boxerlover, it really bothers me as well. I have offered to take the pups from her & deal with bottle feedings and getting no sleep. I know there are lots of people out there that would love one. It breaks my heart when I hear something like she does.

I have a white boxer and will agree with all those who say that there are a lot of myths that fly around about the white boxer breed. While my Tuna is bi-laterally deaf, he is just like any other dog (actually, he "listens" better than my Goldendoodle most of the time).
I'm more of a "rescue" girl than a "breeder" girl, so I would encourage you to browse your local shelters for a white boxer (petfinder.com). I found Tuna at one of my local rescues and I can tell you my life wouldn't be the same without him! If you do end up purchasing or adopting a deaf white boxer, I would recommend the vibrating collar for training (not the shock collar!). It worked miracles on Tuna! Good luck! |

I adore my white boxer boy, who is not deaf, and IS prone to sunburn. I think white boxers have a 95% chance of being a little bit wacky.....in a good way. LOL.
