Ok here we go again with Lukin.
He just had TPLO surgery on friday, after a few days he was bearing some weight on the bad leg, looked like his recovery was going in the right direction. Last night around 1am i heard him crying a bit in his crate, so i took him outside to do his business and i noticed he was using his leg a little less. I didn't think much about it and put him back in, but he just couldnt get comfortable and he was whining. I brought him up to my room and same thing, i then finally slept on the floor next to him and he went to sleep, but i was really worried because this was odd. I woke up and his knee was very swollen and discharged a pinkyish liquid. Also would barely use it. I took him to the surgeon, it might be an infected, and if it is and the anti-biotics cant fight it then he has to have surgery to remove the plate in his knee. With his luck, it will be an infection and the anti-biotics wont kill the infection. anyone who is knowledgable with TPLO, what happens if they have to remove the plate, his bone is not even close to being healed, how will he ever heal? between ear infections, allergies, torn ACL, this guy has been in and out of vet offices, Its like he is cursed. Oh and right now he is sleeping and hes been breathing really rapidly. I never imagined getting my first boxer to be like this, im very stressed and just want him to be healthy again. sorry for the rant |

Poor Lukin! I'm sure he's so grateful having you right by his side through this though.
As far as making him comfortable, you may want to ask the vet about Xanex or something. My little guy had a really bad time with his neuter and would turn in circles, plop down, turn circles, over and over. Vet gave him a low dose prescription of I believe Xanex to calm him down so he could get comfortable. Worked wonders for his sake... And mine. I hope the antibiotics work and he gets better soon! POOR LUKIN!! I just want to snuggle him and make him feel all better. How in the world did he get an infection?? Did they do a smear of the puss to see what bacteria they are dealing with? I will pray that they dont have to go back in and I agree, I would ask for something to mellow him out a bit.
Who ended up doing the surgery?

its weird because his incision looks good, doesn't look infected. Just his knee is very swollen and filled with this fluid. the results should be in tomorrow to see what kind of infection it is. Dr. Kevin Isakow did the surgery. About Dr. Isakow :: Surgery |

Awww, poor guy.... I think he has pain in the knee. Did the vet give you anything for pain for him? If not, I would call him and ask him about it... I sure hope he feels better soon.. Please keep us posted.

the vet drained more of the fluid out today and said Lukins temp. went down a bit.
He is definately feeling a bit better, he isnt pacing around trying to find a place to get comfortable and just seems all around in a better mood. I was trying to think of what could have caused this, and i was thinking about the rash on his belly. I was spraying his belly rash with a topical spray and i could have very possibly sprayed a bit on his incision. I also remember spraying him a few days ago and he yelped. I know he hates the spray and it freaks him out, but ive never heard him yelp before when spraying him. Gotta let the surgeon know tomorrow when i go for a recheck |

Lukin's temperature is back to normal, he is using his leg more. He isn't eating much and he vomited twice which i would guess is from the antibiotics. The antibiotics are supposed to be taken with food, but Lukin doesn't really want to eat sooooo its kinda tricky lol.
The culture came back and the surgeon said "The culture grew a little bug but it is non-resistant which is good" So things look like they're going in the right direction. |
