I am puppy sitting a 5 month old Boxer Mastiff mix and his mom told me when he gets too tired his eyes get really red and bloodshot. And alas they really do. Jaxon will occasionally get red eyes but not often and Baylee never does.

My dogs eyes get red when they are stressed out or when they've over exerted themselves, I.e while playing, running, wrestling etc. I think it's a blood pressure thing personally. However, I can always tell when my pups are fighting sleep, their eyes do tend to get red but its different than when they are stressed.
Oh it could also be allergies either airborne or food. My advice, start with the easier to rule out like, before your pup plays, check his eyes, before he goes to sleep check his eyes, before he eats, check his eyes. If you notice an increase in redness after one of these events it might help to lead you in the right direction or just quiet your worry. If you can't tie it down, bring it up with your vet. Have him check his eyes. Did you know that an eye exam can actually tell a doctor if you are having heart issues? Same for dogs if your vet will take the time to do a thorough exam. Best of luck with your baby. |

A picture might help. There's a few different things that could be causing the redness.

I agree with the above posts. Kailer always gets red eyes when tired and stressed; whereas Titan does not. But also keep in mind it could also indicate a possible eye infection. Both of my boys have just gone through treatment for 'pink eye'.
