Last time I took Sally to visit my SIL and her dog, Sally came home with lots of scratches and small cuts from her Spaniel X Poodle, Harley, who is not very good with other dogs.
Her previous dog was very dominating and was not very nice to Harley. When Sally was little they played nicely, but that time she was the same height as Harley (about 9lb heavier though). Last week we went to visit and Sally is now 4 inches taller than him and about 22lb heavier, he started bullying her again and we have been working to distract him so that he will just leave her alone, but this time Sally decided enough was enough and she decided she is in charge, stood over him and told him off, not barking or growling, just body language... and suddenly No more biting or aggression from Harley... ![]() She is still gentle they play and he mouths her but he isn't snarling or biting as hard, he isn't trying to push her around, and 10 minutes later they were laying together on the top step relaxing together! AMAZING! now that she is the one in charge, and she isn't being nasty to him, he has relaxed and become a wonderful dog for her to play with! We stayed for about 3 hours and they were playing nicely together, there was a little bit of a tiff over my husband, but were claiming ownership of him, but Sally put a stop to it and Harley settled quickly and then both could get a pat from him. I am SOO happy! There is hope that my SIL can be our puppy sitter when we go away for a night! Last time we gave up on that idea after Sallys injuries, none were at all serious, just lots of them. |

Harley seemed much happier not having to be in charge, the moment she took charge he immediately settled.
My SIL thinks maybe trying to be the leader was too stressful for him because he only knew a bossy mean leader. I am ust glad they are getting on, we will have to do another visit soon to reinforce the good behaviour! |

Glad to hear visits will now go much smoother! I have the opposite problem. Dempsey is the one who always tries to be large and in charge. My 12.5 lb. westie mix occasionally has to put him in his place, which she does very successfully - lol!
