Default Just so I don't get it wrong again.....

Hello,

I'm sorry but I have another stupid question!

I'm so new to boxers and I want to do the best for Ricki!

I have now got: raw beef marrow bones.

They are huge! About 8 inches long :O!

Are these the right ones for Ricki? Am I right in saying he can have them raw? Do I have to defrost them or can he have them frozen like his kong?

Thanks again!

No more silly questions for a while now I promise.

I'd say if there's a LOT of extra meat still attached you might be ok to offer it until they get close to the bone, but these types of weight bearing bones are very hard and known to crack or break teeth so you definitely want to use caution with them.

Don't feel bad. I used to give them to mine too before I knew how damaging to the teeth they can be.

Hey better to be safe than sorry! I didn't know this either, so your *stupid* question may help a lot of others who are afraid to or just wouldn't know to ask. So I always say, ask away!

Mandy is right. Weight baring bones can cause tooth and even jaw fractures. By weight baring that usually means leg bones. You can try supervised chew times with the bones and see how he does. Dont let him have it for to long as marrow is pure fatty goodness and can give him the runs.

Next time you are out and about at the grocery store look at Beef Ribs or Pork Hocks Those are great treats

or if you are at the pet store you could try some Bully Sticks.

The only raw bones I can get here is pork neck bones. I give them to Kippah she loves them.

Liz, thanks for posting your question! I think there is a lot of knowledge and experience among the people in this forum. I for one am happy you posted because I always find myself lost and worried when it comes to bones!!

Thanks Kari! I have added those to my list also :0)

Does this go for turkey legs too?? I feed Nikki the drumsticks. She eats it but I'm always amazed how strong her teeth must be to get through that.

I am also new to this prey raw and taking VERY baby steps lol. I feed healthy paws raw dog food in the mornings so I don't have to watch them eat and to make sure I'm not missing any important supplements. Then in the evenings and weekends they get beef, chicken, turkey or duck and Ive so added kidney with it now. They get yogurt and cottage cheese on the side sometimes too They get omega 3 pills and today I'm going to pick up omega 6 and vitamin E for them Healthy paws also has supplements and kelp in it Is pork ok to feed? I thought I read somewhere not to give the dogs pork?? If its good then I can add that as another protein. And if I'm doing anything wrong PLEASE let me know!!

Oh for treats they get frozen raw duck feet I got from the raw pet store and cheese. For store bought products they have those freeze dried liver treats.

When I get my puppy in the fall I will have a million questions to ask. I switched my dogs from kibble to Healthy paws when Nikki was 6-7 months and added prey when she was about 9 months... A couple months ago.

I love these raw food posts. I always learn from them

Lorraine, How do you find the switch to prey style?? I feed from Iron Will which is already done for me. I am so hesitant to switch over. I should say I am afraid! lol. It makes me so uneasy, which is why I too enjoy these posts. I could never feed kibble again.. not after the beautiful changes I have seen in my dogs both appearance and health!

My girls are kibble fed (hubby is against changing) but would it hurt to allow them raw bones every once in a while for a treat?? Would I stick with the ribs/hocks or would there be a better choice?? I still need to pick up some meat for the dehydrator to make some goodies for my girls.
