Sorry to bring to the same old topic and I'm sorry if it is posted in the wrong place....
I have had my 6 month pup on Blue Buffalo for a couple of months and have ZERO issues. Not even any gas (I've been told that is a big deal for Boxers). Upon searching for a new pet store that sold the food, I noticed that PetSmart and Petco both sell it!?!?!? I had Sadie on Merrick but after they changed formulas, she started getting the runs, BAD!! One of the main reasons I went with Merrick is the quality of ingredients and also the fact it was made and bagged exclusively in their own plant. After it didn't settle well with Sadie, I switched to Blue Buffalo she is fine. Firm stools and no gas, BONUS. My question is; Is it bad food because PetSmart and Petco sell it? I have always avoided buying foods there and now I'm finding the small "natural" type dog foods are now sold there. What do you use? I know every food is different and everyone has the opinion of why one is better that the other one is..... I guess I'm looking for that perfect dog food Sent from my iPhone using Petguide.com Free App

BB is a great dog food at a good price. We switched to it because it was a great food and cost considerably less than what we had Duke on. That and the fact that the other food was making him shed like crazy! I did notice that he had a couple of stinky farts on the weekend but I"m hoping that's just from the transition! Or possibly from treats or the table scraps that he picked up off the floor during my daughter's birthday party this weekend. lol
Oh and it's a bonus that we get 10% off with the Petsmart card too! |

Thanks everyone. I was just concerned. 8 years ago when that big pet food recall happened, I switched from science diet to Merrick.... All these years I thought I was buying great food and it turned out to be made at the same plant as the crappy store brand food I was avoiding. The Science Diet ended up getting recalled also and that was when I stopped buying pet foods at PetCo and PetSmart...... So needless to say when I found allot of the same foods at those stores as my "natural" store sells, I became concerned... It looks like the big chains got smart and starting catering to the people who care about what their dog eats and will pay a few bucks more for the quality. Thanks again.

I worked at petco for a while and my store always encouraged owners to use the good quality dog and cat foods and discouraged the crap foods. I even had yo get 'certified' through the store in pet nutrition. It was basically a course on decifering quality foods from not so quality foods. We really pushed blue, nutro, natural balance, wellness.... etc. So yes it is the same stuff and it's fine to buy from there.

My girls are on BB Freedom. When we got Maggie she was on Old Roy (Walmart brand) food & then we switched her to Iams. She was probably 6 or 7 when the vet recommended we switch her to BB. Ever since that we've been a BB family. We've always purchased the food from PetSmart.

Unfortunately, there is no such thing as the "perfect food"...unless you do homemade, then you know exactly what is going into the food. If I could, I would make their food, but I do not have a lot of time. Every Boxer is different so finding the right food that agrees with them can be quite a feat! It is all trial and error I am afraid. My pups did not do well on Merrick either, they had very runny poop and bad gas. They did well on Orijen for a good time, but their poop started getting runny by the 3rd or 4th bag. Tried to switch them to Acana - and their poop got worse and Daisy broke out in hives. Both Orijen and Acana are very high quality kibble, it just did not agree with them. So I am trying Canine Caviar Holistic Grain Free and so far so good! Their poops are much more formed, they have a bit of gas - but it is not smelly.
Does not matter what store you go to, some bags can be a bad batch. Petco and PetSmart just charge more for the kibble than a smaller store. You are lucky that both dogs are doing well on the same type of food, I know of Boxer parents that have to feed each of their dogs a different type of kibble because of intolerance to food. So I suggest, if you find a food that works well for them, stick to it!
