Thanks for all the well wishes! I told K.O. that all his BF buddies are pulling for him. He smiled. I think he just likes it when I talk to him though.
The Vetalog shot seems to have helped calm things down but he is still favoring his right hind leg. I need to keep him calm for another 5-1/2 days and that isn't easy because he loves his play & exercise time but the Vet was clear.... do not let him re-injure it... let it calm down. The Vet was not very hopeful, the prognosis was that it will get worse and at some point, surgery will be required. The surgery success rate is about 75%. I have him on a quality joint supplement now to help the internal repair. Only time will tell, it's up to K.O.

Hi Knucklehead! I'm so sorry to hear about K.O.'s petella. I went through this with my 1.5 year old boxer last year around this time. Here's my blog about it: EEK! and I'd be happy to answer any of your questions. It was a really hard decision because it wasn't bad enough to NEED surgery, but it was causing an issue and I didn't want to limit his way of life. In the end I did it, and I'm happy I did. I completely understand how you are feeling and will offer any support I can!

thanks eeking! I read your blog about Goomba's experience, it was very helpful. It just so happened that Dr. Lewis called this evening to check on K.O. I had already read your blog and the decision to do surgery pre-emptively on Goomba and I posed that option to Dr. Lewis. We talked about it for a while and she is not in favor of that idea for K.O. and had several good reasons. So, we will keep up the joint supplements and after a few more days put him back to his regular play and exercise routine and see how he does.

Yeah after I did research I knew I was making the unpopular decision. I had been monitoring it for a few months and noticed it getting worse, and like you know with our dogs young age and heavy weight. I knew sooner rather than later it be bad enough he'd need the surgery so I went ahead and got it before 1) it got more expensive and 2) he was in more pain lasting longer than a few minutes.
Maybe supplements would have worked. Maybe it wouldn't have gotten worse and we could have lived with it. I did what I thought was best and it worked for me. Good luck and feel free to message me if you have any questions down the line. Sent from Petguide.com Free App |
