Default How long does a "Pulled Shoulder" take to heal?

I have a 1.5 year old Boxer, Odin. About 2 months ago he started acting, what I described as, "depressed" So I thought that I wasn't playing with him enough, but he didn't want to play. I decided to take him to the vet. They did xrays, found nothing and thought it was proabley just a pulled shoulder. He walks with his head down, doesn't play, doesn't chew on his bones, he sleeps all of the time and walks with an arched back. (they did xrays of his back as well) He babies his two front paws. He often yelps and whins. He is eating and drinking normally. His stool is fine. He was on pain medication for a while but I think it just made it worse. I know that most of his weight is on his front two shoulders so I fiqured this would take a while to heal but it's be almost 2 months. Has anyone ever been through something like this? How long does it take to heal?

I think I'd get a second opinion. *Depending on the severity, injuries can take quite some time to heal, but I've had dogs with just mild shoulder injuries and they didn't act as you've described. *They limped, and would occasionally whine or yelp if they happened to move the wrong way, but they were still interested in playing, toys, bones, etc. *You might also want to have a test for tick-borne disease, or (depending on your location) something fungal like Valley Fever - while the signs aren't exactly typical, these types of diseases are often called 'great imitators' because they can present as so many other possible conditions.

i agree with Jennifer ..she knows MUCH more than i do about boxers as ive only had mine 2 yrs but had dogs all my life..

I HAVE seen those same exact symtoms in lyme disease..i dont know where oyu live but is this a possibilty? im from mass and its a big deal there..even ON frontline plus...& Lyme disease shots...

the symtoms are lethargic, alot of joint and muscle pain..flu like symtoms...etc...feel just AWEFUL !!!

jsut a suggestion..bc it came to my head..

good luck i hope you find an answer...i too would go to another vet..thats too long and too general of an answer

Thank you so much for you answers and your help. I live in Arizona and I took my dog to a vet in Las Vegas they said that it's probabley not Valley Fever because he's not coughing or has no flu like symptons. But your right maybe I should get a second opinion. The reason I haven't is because one of my friends also has a boxer and they said they had the same problem with his and it took him 4 months to get over it. But I wanted to see if anyone else had the same problem. Most of us have large lots and our dogs do ALOT of running, so I thought that's might be what has caused it.

Another possibility would be HOD or OCD, though typically something would show up on the x-rays. *Here's a bit more on those conditions:

In addition to the things that have already been mentioned...It is also possible that his injury is not in the shoulder and maybe in the neck or even in the back....That is very typical with holding the head down and of course they act different because doing normal things either hurts or they get in their mind that it may hurt so they just stop.....After two months a pulled muscle would generally be healed if you kept him pretty calm, so I think it is time for a recheck!

im so glad Sharon answered ...i know all about kinesiology in people..and i was thinking that about the back and neck but i didnt want to go into it where i dont know if in dogs its the same...although we all have muscles and joints...people heal differently..and treatments are different in some cases ...

in a person..if the neck & or back is strained/pulled or torn..it would cause the person to hunch therefore making the head go forward...cause aweful pain and the more you tried to stretch it or straighten it out there more it would hurt and the more it COULD damage the tissue surrounding the injury b/c the body would produce scar tissue that can complicate healing..the scar tissue can produce muscle knots and those knots can pinch nerves...

thank you Sharon...im so glad you are here

Well, Odin's condition got alot worst. This past weekend he started "knuckling" which I KNOW is Nerological or spinal, both being terrible. By the time I took him into the vet he could barley walk, but at least he doesn't seem to be in pain. The has gone from a "pulled shoulder" to an almost dead dog. The vet has kept him overnight to re-do X-rays and blood work. They are testing for Valley Fever, blood parasite.....they are doing a full panel. I know he is going to die which is so sad because he's not even two yet. Of couse no one has ever heard of this in such a young dog. I have the dog that's the medical mystery. So know I'm faced with what to do? A friend of mine has a Rife Machine and offered to let me use it for Odin. He has used it on both of his boxers. He is convinced it cured cancer in one of them. Has anyone heard of this and what do you think?

Never heard of a Rife Machine. *Looks like a bunch of holistic BS. *Though I suppose it can't do any harm? *I hope Odin pulls through this
